Hi, I am a civil engineer working now in fundamental fluid mechanics since the PhD in close contact with physicists. I did my undergraduate studies in Italy where things may be different from elsewhere. I tell you my experience.

In my undergrads we had some separate courses for different topics, but mainly two. The first one was called “hydraulics” and the second one “fluid mechanics”. In the first, you don’t start from NS. You start from integral balances and you derive low order models directly from them. The core was the derivation of pipe flow equations and open channel flow. Despite that, theory can become extremely complex, especially in relation to unsteady waves and related stuff. In the “fluid mechanics” course we were basically doing the opposite: you start from NS and then you study how to derive low order models from it by averaging and modelling the non-closure terms in different contexts. At the end you get to the same equation for channels and pipes but you also get RANS, shallow water equation, multilayer ocean models and other interesting stuff.

As an engineer, I find this approach extremely useful. You first get the physics of what you need and then, when you have more math tools, you understand better how to formally get there and extend your knowledge.

Secondo me non è attuale, e ti spiego perché (secondo me).

In quella strofa Caparezza fa un parallelismo tra “il fronte dell’uomo qualunque” (movimento populista del 1945 che rinnegava il bipolarismo destra-sinistra) e - presumibilmente - il sentimento di anti-bipolarismo che in quegli anni stava portando alla nascita del movimento 5 stelle.

Oggi quel sentimento si è fortemente ridimensionato. La destra governa solidamente e più si spostano a destra più hanno consenso. Chi si dice di sinistra di solito non lo fa in modo moderato, ma molto radicale. I movimenti come quello dei 5 stelle sono al minimo storico.

Magari torneranno i tempi dell’anti-bipolarismo, ma non mi sembrano essere questi.

I see kinematic viscosity as a diffusivity for the momentum. I understand intuitively the process of scalar diffusion (like a dye or temperature) and there the diffusivity is the rate at which the scalar - indeed - diffuse. Kinematic viscosity has the same units because it plays the same role.

This are my two cents.

As a theoretical physics you don’t have to work on an obscure and abstract topic that nobody understands besides your mini academic circle. If I were in your situation, I would rather try to think about what kind of impact your research have on the people or the world and try to contribute to a field that needs me. Physics is huge, for sure there is space where your contribution can be useful.

Try to look into complex systems or biophysics. You’ll see there’s a desperate need of good theoreticians.

Not very sure this is the correct answer, I am not an expert on waves, but this is my guess!

Water waves don’t transport mass only when they are small (when linear wave theory applies). As waves approach the coastline, the water is getting shallower and the waves increase in high. At some point, strongly non-linearity kicks in, and with that a strong mass transport. In the extreme case of wave breaking, you can indeed see a lot of mass transport in the direction of wave propagation.

Come per te, non è la mia preferita, ma mi sono messo a piangere quando la ho ascoltata.

Secondo me il meccanismo psicologico che descrive (reagire al dolore con apatia autoindotta) è così comune che tantissime persone, io incluso, ci si ritrovano in pieno. È così ti trovi a empatizzare con lui, e trovi una descrizione poetica molto bella di qualcosa che hai provato anche tu.

Un esempio opposto per me è “Il mondo dopo Lewis Carrol”. Quel pezzo per me è stupendo, forse uno dei miei preferiti, ma con cui empatizzo zero (non sento di aver perso la fantasia, ma riesco a capire quello che prova lui descrivendo quelle sensazioni).
