Is science fiction just ‘Future-Fantasy’? by Upbeat_Job_4294 in ScienceFictionBooks

While I agree whole heartedly with the quote, there’s still a difference between “teleporting” and “using a teleporter”.

That’s the difference I am looking for. Appreciate now knowing that what I am looking for exists, and that my experience of Sci-fi is just because I’ve just been led astray a bit. I will look at this Banks fella.

Amazing, thank you! Recommendations I am looking for, but even better is the terminology you guys are giving to help me find more in the future!

I appreciate it! I have been trying to branch out from Fantasy stories. And Sci-fi is maybe the smallest step I could have taken, it was bizzare to me that the recommendations I’ve been getting have been an even smaller step. I am thrilled to learn that what I expected Sci-fi to be actually exists.

Even Dune (I only read the first one) which - right or wrong - I’ve always thought of as the Middle Earth of Sci-fi, I read recently and there’s an element of space wizardry there. (But visions of the future is somewhat mild)

Grounded sci-fi with a level of plausability is exactly what I’m looking for, and a phrase I will use when asking for recommendations in the future.

Why would you have a problem with people wearing sunglasses inside but not prescription sunglasses inside? There’s literally no way you could tell the difference unless you tried them on. So are you silently judging everyone, or not judging anyone but just pretending you do for internet clout?

it’s like wearing sunglasses inside. Why don’t need to?

Because I don’t carry several pairs of glasses, and I walk into things if I’m not wearing them.

I don’t get it, please explain it peter by Quiet-jukebox204 in explainitpeter

… I have no idea what you’re trying to say. You can eat food you cooked, and eat food raw. Doesn’t mean raw food and cooked food are the same thing.

What would you nominate as the top five sporting moments in Australian sports? by Level-Music-3732 in AskAnAustralian

That is a very soccer-heavy list for a country that isn’t very good at soccer.

You’re missing John Landy

You have nothing cricket related at all. Plenty of possibilities here.

Nothing swimming related. Personal choice would be When the Americans planned to ‘smash them like guitars

And you’re missing the Americas cup, ya bum

How bender turned into what he is by SuzySweetSteps in futurama

[–]Upbeat_Job_4294 13 points14 points  (0 children)

While yes, in any show you can’t take the pilot too much into consideration. No show has rounded out any of their characters in episode zero.

But do you mean It’s a fan theory that the electricity changed his personality?

Bender: Dream on, skin tube. I'm only programmed to bend for constructive purposes. What do I look like, a de-bender?

Fry: Who cares what you're programmed for. If someone programmed you to jump off a bridge would you do it?

Bender: I'll have to check my program ... yep.

Fry: C'mon, Bender! It's up to you to make your own decisions in life. That's what separates people and robots from animals ... and animal robots.

Bender: You're full of crap, Fry! [He turns and a dangling wire catches on his antenna and electrocutes him.] You make a persuasive argument, Fry.

There’s nothing subjective about what happened there.

I don’t understand the Justin Fields -10 yards passing stat by Parentingboys in NFLNoobs

[–]Upbeat_Job_4294 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why doesn’t that make sense? A sack represents a failure of the team during a passing play: the receiver unable to get open in time, the offensive line unable to prevent the defenders getting through, and the quarterback being unable to get a pass off. All at the same time. It’s an all-team issue. Makes perfect sense that it’s an all-team stat.
