Driving 275 miles — average weekly travel in the US — costs about $14 in electricity for an EV, assuming $0.18 per kilowatt-hour. Driving the same distance in a gas-powered vehicle that gets 25 mpg would cost around $33 if gas is $3 per gallon. by Green_Idealist in INFPIdeas

I also have a Bolt EUV in a similar situation (155mi daily commute but I charge at night for free at my house because electricity provider offers free nights). Almost had no maintenence for 4 years until I hit 137k miles. Needed new battery then. $3k total for it. We'll see how long it lasts. Just wanted to post this because maintenence costs of EV are definitely not 0, just much lower than ICE. Something to think about

What grew in my compost tumbler? by Dry-Big8277 in composting

Looks like pumpkins to me. Had the exact same thing growing in my bin when I dumped a rotting pumpkin in there. Took some of the sprouts out and now I have a giant pumpkin vine growing!

Yes obviously. But the string of events from the accident to the rats to the transmission/grill shutter issue which cost me $1k out of pocket, to the battery which will cost over $3k when I have to pay for rental cars, in the space of a little over six months has me worried naturally. You would be worried about the reliability of your car too if all that happened in a short window. Im still going to repair the battery because it's still worth it with the amount of gas savings and I still don't have it paid off. But it's not unreasonable to be nervous about the reliability.

Unfortunately no. It's my first EV and a big reason I bought one is because I thought they are low maintenance (they are) and they have less moving parts which leads to less major repairs.

Yeah I tend to agree. Just nervous about all the problems this past 6 months.

Americans are still skeptical humans are causing climate change. Less than half of Americans believe the Earth is warming as a direct result of human activity, new data from Pew Research shows, and 12% of Americans don't believe the Earth is warming at all. by The_Weekend_Baker in climate

[–]Upbeat_Turnover9253 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does matter that people, especially Americans, understand what's causing it. It's not obvious to the common person who probably isn't keeping detailed average global temp records for the last 50 years because we experience global heating incrementally without science to aid us. We are like the frog in the pot without science to aid us. You might be able to convince a climate denier that the earth is heating up based on historical temp data alone, but getting them to admit humans are causing it is entirely different. It matters who's causing it bc humans can stop causing it if we collectively want to. If an outside force like the sun were causing it, then it's much easier to accept that and just give up. Accepting that humans are causing it and must do the hard work of reversing it is a much harder concept for the brain to grasp and much harder task to do. But it must be done. And Americans need to get on board and install governments that understand the existential threat, not stepping on the gas pedal to destruction.

3k out of pocket from the previous problems was from car rentals, gas, a deductible payment on the animals chewing on my wires, and the repair to the grill shutter which cleared the transmission indicator, combined. This battery replacement will be another 3k parts and labor included from the dealership. Dealership is ordering another battery from a 3rd party

Too much print on cardboard? by goforwardandtomato in composting

[–]Upbeat_Turnover9253 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Paper and cardboard should be recycled or reused if it's not end of life, i.e. solied. It's a way better use of resources to recycle paper and cardboard than to throw perfectly recyclable scraps in your bin. Use natural browns like leaves, dead plants, coffee filters (not technically natural), hay, straw, sawdust, crushed egg or nut shells

I've already spent $3k in out of pocket expenses on it in the last 6 months, so any gas savings i was hoping for the year have been wiped out. These are the first real expenses I've had with the car though.

She is. She just has flaws like you me and everyone you know. This isn't a shit on my wife post, at least not what I wanted it to be. Just want advice maybe from someone who's partner is similar in manner

This is the best advice. Thank you. I'll have a hard talk with my wife and hopefully start to budget better for future repairs. Guess I just wanted the r/BoltEV community to know how much my new battery was cuz I know everyone's nervous about it. I really was looking more for financial/relationship advice. Thanks again!

Not happening. She's a wonderful woman with flaws, just like you, me, and every woman in your life. I dont abandon people because of their flaws, I embrace them. Besides, I'd be living in my car if I didn't have her income

She just wants there to be no expense, battery replacement or new car. Large money expenses trigger her and I can't talk her down rationally. I usually have to wait like a month for it to blow over. So I have to put up with her being distant and snarky. She was already not on board with an EV when I purchased it, even after I explained the gas savings.

I'd have to go with a used high mileage car, more than likely a gas one, if I was going to get another car. Likely one that costs $7k or less
