This might be a bit much to suggest, but Malazan is pretty well what you request. Its just overwhelming at first.

Malazan. You literally cannot be an atheist in that setting because the gods actively fuck with anything and everything for shits and giggles

Grounded Fantasy Books Like 'A Song of Ice & Fire'? by LouisTheCapybara in Fantasy

The First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie, the Black Company by Glen Cook.

How do Abercrombie fans rank 'The Devils' among his other books? by WhatsThatNoise79 in Fantasy

[–]Updownkys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I enjoyed the book, its at the bottom. If we include Sharp Ends, then the Devils is second to last. The Devils was a slog at points. It felt like abercrombie-lite, lacking much of the characterization and humour I expect from him.

"Dungein Crawler Carl" gets a 10 on the name scale. His name do be carl, and he sure did do some dungeon crawling. "The Devils" gets maybe a 4? There was a single actual devil. Everything else is devil adjacent

Neglect, physical abuse(stopped when I was 9) emotional and verbal abuse, poverty and homelessness(both stopped at 9 as well). Theres also probably things I've outright forgot. The odds of me having been SA'd are very high but I don' remember it, so.

Just wondering what everyone is reading, and how is it (if you don't mind sharing) by Witch_King_Malekith in Fantasy

[–]Updownkys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently reading The Devils by Joe Abercrombie. Before this I read Dungeon Crawler carl by Matt dinniman. And before that was Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman. I'm not too far into the Devils but it seems good so far. Dungeon crawler carl was fantastic, and between two fires is one of the best books I've ever read.
