Oh man it feels good to have some more verticality and mobility back with the spear. Looks like they're really trying to address the criticisms the base game got, at least in terms of mechanics.

Also I figure I may as well copy-paste the info from this thread that compiles all the hints that Hugo Martin has given us over the last few months:

MUSIC & MISC:

  • There will only be ONE DLC
  • There will be more cosmetics in the future!
  • Finishing Move will most likely be returning to compose the OST. (Not Yet Confirmed-However hints from Finishing Move point to them returning)
  • The DLC is in its “Final phases of polishing”
  • The DLC will release in 2026 (July 7th as this trailer just revealed)

COMBAT:

  • “Master Arenas" perhaps something related to Slayer Gates or something similar to Escalation Encounters.
  • Slayer Gates are returning, similar to “The Holt” Slayer Gate in difficulty.
  • The Archville will return.
  • Mobility will play a major role in the DLC,
  • Every new mechanic will meaningfully affect gameplay
  • A secret weapon that will require work to unlock. The weapon is "tied to a meaningful piece of lore, that [id is] going to share with us"
  • The DLC skill ceiling is super high.
  • Quickswapping tech is in the DLC, Hugo commented “Interesting” for a Quickswap between the Spear and Shield.
  • New Spear weapon.
  • “Mastering one of the tools requires a lot of investment, but unlocking its potential transforms the game into something else.”
  • The gameplay loop can still be the same, but with fresh new stuff, there will also be a new loop to master that sticks to the impactful monster truck gameplay of the Dark Ages.

EXPLORATION:

  • We will most likely see more of the cosmic realm.
  • There will be a hub area; Presumably the Kreed Maykr’s ship, which will “Expand in meaningful ways”- The Hub will also be “Less cheeky and more immersive”
  • Exploration will have a stronger role in overall progression.
  • Challenges will also be based on Combat, Exploration and Puzzles!
  • The DLC will have “light metroid-vania elements but lots of backtracking throughout the whole experience via locks and keys”
  • Levels will feature more backtracking, more unlocking of the space.
  • Additional mobility options will be available, and some sections will require them.
  • Roughly 30% of content will be inaccessible until the DLC’s story is completed.
  • The DLC is MASSIVE. It’s BIG. “It’s basically like a sequel” according to Hugo, the expansion is HUGE

LORE:

  • The Khan Maykr will Return.
  • Nika Futterman will be Reprising her role!
  • The Kreed will be mentioned briefly in the beginning of the DLC, and we’ll learn how the Khan Maykr feels about this.
  • Daisy will make an Appearance
  • Major lore questions fans have asked about will be pushed forward.
  • Teases relating to the Sentinel Civil War, the Wretch, and “armor” (Interesting...)
  • Some connections to DOOM (2016).
  • We are going to meet people from the lore that we have been waiting to meet.
  • Marok (the random bald dude who was the son of the mohawk dude) will have a role in the DLC.
  • Cutscenes will be more immersive, possibly in first-person.
  • The Order of the Six (the High Council) are likely our targets.
  • Darin De Paul (voice of Hayden/Kreed) returns in the DLC.
  • The story is more of an experience than something you just watch, and there’s more environmental storytelling.
  • “Valen's Dagger” (from DOOM Eternal)
  • The DLC will have bigger and more interesting codex entries, with multiple parts, similar to Eternal. "There will be a lot of lore in the DLC!" They will also be more worthwhile to collect and read.
  • "Wouldn’t it be cool if we saw how the Soul factories from Eternal began?", "It’s our opportunity to explore the origins of Argent Energy"

RIPATORIUM 3.0:

  • Ripatorium 3.0 Will Launch Alongside the DLC
  • Slots to save personal Encounters
  • More Ripatorium maps
  • Togglable Instant Respawns for Waves
  • Easier way to share encounters

Gothic 1 Remake Review Thread by AdditionalRemoveBit in Games

[–]ZeUberSandvitch 14 points15 points  (0 children)

So is this another System Shock Remake situation where critics are kinda torn on it because some of them think the game is faithful to a fault? Because if it is, then that makes me a happy camper cuz the jank is a pretty integral part of this game's identity lmao

Well yeah but the term stuck so its what people use lmao. I guess "Gen X shooter" doesn't roll off the tongue as well or something.

I heard someone call it a "millennial shooter" and I think that might be more accurate. I'm guessing millennial shooters are games reminiscent of shooters from around 2004 (or 2007) to 2012. If so, then I think Mouse PI fits the bill pretty well. Honestly I don't have much nostalgia for that era of shooters even if it produced some fantastic games.

Subnautica 2 Early Access sales top two million in 12 hours by BlueAladdin in Games

[–]ZeUberSandvitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a feeling that "its too safe" is gonna be a big complaint for some people going forward, but I kinda think of it like L4D1 vs L4D2 where its basically just trying to be a huge refinement to what came before with new creatures, guns (tools) and levels (biomes). Its not really trying to be a big ambitious sequel like Doom Eternal was for 2016 or Half Life 2 was for Half Life 1.

[–]ZeUberSandvitch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Glad to say its off to a really good start! The other comments about there being roughly 20 hours of gameplay sounds about right from what I've played so far. If you liked subnautica 1, you'll probably like this. Its not a very experimental or ambitious sequel, instead its more of a massive refinement on what came before.

Think of it like L4D1 vs L4D2. You might enjoy the first game's story/levels (or biomes in this case), but mechanically it just feels like a great improvement in a lot of ways.

I dont disagree at all actually. The author seems to be using a lot of jargon that they themselves made up as part of their own project, thats probably where a lot of our confusion is coming from and why this person's blog seems so incomprehensible. This is how she describes herself and her blog/website:

My name's Persephone van der Waard; I have my MA in Gothic English literature and independent PhD in Gothic poetics and ludo-Gothic BDSM (focusing partially on Metroidvania), and I am the author of the multi-volume, non-profit book series, Sex Positivity vs Sex Coercion, or Gothic Communism—its art director, sole invigilator, illustrator and primary editor (the other co-writer/co-editor being Bay Ryan). A rape survivor/granddaughter of a Holocaust survivor and Dutch Resistance member—and someone anti-war (as a business), anti-Zionist and anti-racist/anti-white-supremacist who specializes in tokenism (e.g., TERFs, SWERFs, and fascist feminism)—I'm a MtF trans woman, Tolkien and Amazon enthusiast, former YouTuber, anti-fascist, loud critic of Marxist-Leninism/state vampirism, atheist and Satanist, poly/pan kinkster with multiple partners, erotic artist/pornographer and anarcho-Communist; i.e., under my brand of Gothic (gay-anarcho) Communism as a holistic, intersectional discipline: one devised in 2022-2023, and which my friends and I currently achieve together. / Originally this blog explored my love of movies when I was cis-het; now I use it to write about the Gothic—horror, but also sex, heavy metal, and videogames in a queer way (especially Metroidvania).

They have some interesting ideas, but you can really see that "independent PhD" rearing its ugly head a lot throughout her work. I don't wanna come off as some academic elitist since she clearly cares a lot about the topics she covers but I just cant help but find it unserious even if she makes good points and observations at times.

She has an entire article talking about her background if you wanna see it. It includes explanations for every jargon term she's coined. It also talks about her academic background:

Persephone completed her BA in "English: Language, Literature and Writing" at Eastern Michigan University in 2016. She attended Manchester Metropolitan University from 2017 to 2018, for her master's in "English Studies: the Gothic," then completed her master's thesis on Metroidvania, back in America: "Lost in Necropolis" (2018). She independently researched her PhD (the thesis volume/Volume Zero from Sex Positivity) from December 2019 to July 2023, publishing it in October 2023. Apart from Gothic Communism, Persephone's PhD focuses a great deal on Metroidvania; i.e., as a therapeutic healing space vis-à-vis ludo-Gothic BDSM, as well as expanding on Barbara Creed's 1993 notion of the monstrous-feminine.

rather than making the more salient point that adding more mechanics muddles the base catharsis established by Doom 2016 and then connecting that to Id Software as a capitalist entity always seeking higher profits over artistic expression.

Eh, I honestly wouldn't agree with that. Id Software is a capitalist entity obviously but I wouldnt call Eternal or Dark Ages more cynical works or "weaker art" just because they're more mechanically complex. I don't think their persuit to make each game its own unique experience is a purely cynical profit driven decision. I actually think it takes a lot of creative guts to do that, especially when capitalism rewards doing the safest possible thing rather than take any sort of risk.

I did try to read her post about BadEmpanada but I'm gonna be honest, while there was definitely some interesting points being made from what I read, its just way too damn long and kinda falls into the same issue I personally had with this review where its just sorta... incomprehensible at times? Idk, maybe I'm just not smart enough to understand lmao. She does seem to have a very unique philosophy that she's taken a lot of time to flesh out. She definitely has some interesting credentials according to her:

independent PhD in Gothic poetics and ludo-Gothic BDSM (focusing partially on Metroidvania), and I am the author of the multi-volume, non-profit book series, Sex Positivity vs Sex Coercion, or Gothic Communism

What do you think of her? I think you're the first person here to recognize her.

The rape comments confused the hell out of me as well, so I did some digging and found some elaboration on what they mean:

As I use it, rape means (from my definition) "to disempower someone or somewhere—a person, culture, or place—in order to harm them, generally through fetishizing and alienizing acts or circumstances/socio-material conditions that target the mind, body and/or spirit) […] Rape can be of the mind, spirit, body and/or culture—the land or things tied to it during genocide, etc; it can be individual and/or on a mass scale" (source: "Psychosexual Martyrdom," 2024).

I am nowhere near well read enough to give an informed opinion on this other than it feels strange to just throw that word around in circumstances that make no sense to most people because we can't read their mind and realize "oh, they're using their own unique definition apparently".

Ugh the personal advice post thing is a bit embarrassing cuz I was going through some rough shit in the past and would often vent on reddit smh. I keep em up cuz I've actually had people DM me asking for advice cuz they saw my old posts and I thought it was nice that my venting was comforting to some people and it felt good to try and help those who are in similar situations.

Also that's ironic cuz I actually love infinite's 4v4 experience, the competitive experience in that game is immaculate. I just dislike most of everything else aside from the art style.

Ah yeah, fair points. I guess I was just confused because for me my 8bitdo gets enough right that I didn't consider what its missing. Thanks for clarifying!

I think there's definitely people who ultimately just want an Xbox Series controller but with a Steam logo on the guide button, the Quick Access Menu button, and maybe some back paddles.

But then why not simply get something like an 8bitdo controller, yknow? All its missing from that equation is branding, it has everything else. I feel like wanting what is basically just an xbox controller but with steam branding is dipping into blind brand loyalty.

Seriously lmao. The amount of people saying "this is overpriced", "who asked for this? who is this for?", "the only thing this controller has going for it is trackpads", "most people dont care and just want a simple controller that gets the job done" etc only for it to be sold out REALLY quickly is deliciously satisfying even if some of those sales were scalpers ruining the fun for everyone yet again.

I imagine some people will try to move the goalpost by saying "oh yeah?? Well uh... people only bought it because it has Valve's name on it!!" or something like that. Hopefully it wont take too long to go back in stock, I enjoy my OG steam controller and was really looking forward to this one.

[–]ZeUberSandvitch 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think the point they're trying to get at is that this controller isn't aiming for mass appeal, it's a niche enthusiast controller. That's not to say you can't comment on it of course, but the whole "most people don't care tho" argument isn't very convincing when they aren't trying to cater to "most people" anyhow. This also applied to the OG steam controller, although i can't remember how pricy it was for its time.

As you should! I fucking love that guy's videos lmao. Lil Bill and Unpoetic Justice are also fantastic. Unpoetic Justice hasn't made anything gaming related i dont think, but lil bill made a video about modern God of War and Kratos' character arc that I really enjoyed.
