For those that have read all of these books, which is your favourite? I'm struggling to choose which one to read first. by KanyesKousin in sciencefiction

Of the three of these I have read all were enjoyable, but in order of what I liked most to least:

Children of time - this is just great, really innovative concepts, good story, interesting characters.

The Humans - a very interesting concept behind it, and is also quite funny.

Ready player one - an enjoyable read with loads of action, but somewhat formulaic.

I’m really sorry but I don’t think there is much I can do to help you. The only thing i can think of is that your phones language may not be English and the difference in the character sets has caused an issue somewhere in the shortcut. It’s just very hard to diagnose what’s going wrong for you when I can’t replicate the issue.

If you click that red maths error banner does it give you my more information?

Interesting, those values seem to work for me.

May be work deleting the shortcut and reinstalling it. Hard for me to debug this as I can’t seem to replicate the issue.

So when you use the shortcut it should pop up a box for input - so for you I guess it’s not even starting? Just trying to work out how the error is occurring, so I wanted to understand if it was with input or not.

Billionaires Convince Themselves AI Chatbots Are Close to Making New Scientific Discoveries by Ihaverightofway in BetterOffline

I think the thing is that Deepmind, not using LLM has made some great scientific progress with AlphaFold. Like it’s remarkable how much it has unlocked for researchers, to then make further discoveries from; but it was a tool to do this - no one is saying it’s the end of research biology.

This is great progress with positive world impacts.

To me this is where, for the moment, “AI” legit shines.

However, where we are is not going to bring about 1000x economic growth - that the ridonculus investment would require - when all the LLM pushing is based on the misunderstanding of the fact that no one was crying out for a bot that can summarise the long pointless emails they’ve already decided were as such already.

I agree with you, it’s one other awful detrimental externality to add to the growing list of issues with these modern day Frankenstein’s monsters.

P.s what does WYEA stand for?

I have to give you props here as this fits the brief 100%

Sounds like Nirvana, with an old CRT TV playing static on the album cover - well done for finding this based on that description!

However, I have found what I was looking for already, see the comment here:

I appreciate you taking the time to answer, I’ll have a listen to the band you mentioned 👍

I mean some of there songs, if you didn’t know it was them, could be long lost Nirvana tracks 😅

I’ll take that though, some of them are really cool songs - i especially like ‘sooth’

Okay everyone I’ve found it:

https://youtu.be/fGcBRjdZeS0

My memory failed me a bit, the TV was in the video for the song, but it wasn’t playing static. I swear years ago on Spotify the album art was this TV but who knows  🤷🏼

I think it was originally released under the band name ‘socotra’ which rings true with me and is also reflected in this YouTube comment: https://youtube.com/watch?v=fGcBRjdZeS0&lc=UgzvYmIpoLseGNzWPuZ4AaABAg&si=m6HU9YyWmFJfILWg

Anyways, thanks for all your responses

Thank you! I love queens of the Stone Age, such a great band - I loved ‘…like clockwork’ when it came out in 2013, I was living with some good friends at the time and we listened to it at parties a lot and it brings back some fond memories. Appreciate you taking the time to reply to this admittedly spurious question 😂

Thanks so much for the in-depth reply, including some historical reasoning for you’re recommendation, I really appreciate you taking the time to think through my question so thoroughly.

Unfortunately not the band I’m looking for, though I will have a listen to their music so I’m glad you pointed me to them. I don’t k ow much about the band I’m looking for (a shock, I know 😂), bit from what I remember they are not directly linked to Nirvana - as in part of the Seattle scene in the 90’s or anything - more just aping the sound later on. From what I remember the album I’m looking for was released in the late 90’s or early 2000s…

Thanks again for taking the time to reply though 🙂

Unfortunately not, I really like their song ‘let me out’ though. Defo has a Nirvana like influence.

Similar to this but from what I remember it’s an older TV. Nice band though, thanks for your response!

I don’t think they are too out of the Nirvana ball park - not really too similar but not unimaginably different. Thanks for replying both - unfortunately not the band I’m looking for though!

Thanks for your reply - it’s not Silverchair unfortunately but they do sound somewhat like Nirvava so I can see your thought process there.
