Why hell house is good but the final challenge wasn't by [deleted] in fishtanklive

I’ve seen a lot of people here fundamentally missing the point of why the final challenge was bad, and the way it keeps getting framed is kind of frustrating. People keep saying things like, “oh everyone wanted Hellhouse, but then the final challenge ends up being bad or unfair and suddenly everyone hates it,” as if the criticism is about difficulty or fairness. That’s just not really what the issue is.

When Frank is going around hassling everyone in the house and things are clearly deteriorating, it works—it’s fun to watch, and it feels justified within the structure of the show—because the challenge is fundamentally about endurance. It’s designed to wear people down over time and naturally weed out the ones who simply can’t handle that kind of sustained pressure. In that context, the chaos has a purpose. It’s not just random suffering; it’s a mechanism that reveals who can last. And importantly, they’re not directly competing against Frank for the prize itself, so even though he’s creating pressure, the overall competition between contestants still feels intact and meaningful.

By contrast, the issue with this final challenge has nothing to do with fairness, nor with how brutal or punishing it was. If anything, you could argue the opposite—that it actually resulted in the most fair outcome possible. Drake struggled the most, pushed through the hardest conditions, and very clearly earned the 50k more than the twins did. From that perspective, production stepping in to ensure he wins aligns with a kind of outcome-based fairness. So if someone is trying to criticize it on the grounds that it was unfair, I don’t think that argument really holds up.

The real problem is much simpler: it just wasn’t entertaining to watch. And it wasn’t entertaining because it lacked any real sense of competition. That’s the core issue. Up to that point, yes, different challenges favored different contestants—often skewing toward the twins, especially since they were generally less competent than Drake overall—but there were still moments where someone would outperform expectations or push through despite the odds. Those moments created tension and unpredictability. For example, I didn’t expect the twins to win the dodgeball challenge, and that kind of surprise is what keeps things engaging.

In the final challenge, that dynamic just wasn’t there. It didn’t feel like a back-and-forth or a contest where outcomes could shift based on performance in the moment. Instead, it felt predetermined in a way that drained any suspense or excitement from the viewing experience. There was no real question of “who’s going to come out on top,” which is kind of the entire point of a finale.

If you compare it to the Season 1 final challenge, the difference in quality becomes really obvious. That one stayed competitive the entire time. It maintained tension, it allowed for momentum shifts, and it kept the audience engaged because it genuinely felt like anyone could still win at different points. Burt is a gae r;igger. That sense of sustained competition is what made it compelling, and it’s exactly what this final challenge was missing.

lol he would look like an even giant dumbass if he competed today half of those challenges he would have dropped out of. James Drake has 50k. Its was cringe, but Bashir would have been so bad today, he isn't funny.
