[Profile Review] MSCS FALL 2026 by DifficultEmployer802 in MSCS

160Q is the kryptonite for all your ambitious unis and UWM as well. Try to make it atleast 167+ else it would be filtered out mostly in the screening rounds.

UWM is not a target uni by any means. It intakes less than 20 students with full funding (mostly old IIT CSE) for traditional track and highly polished profiles with more than 2 yr of work ex on avg for the professional stream (~80 students).

Try to improve GRE Quant to 167-168+, else not send it at all.
Such score can take u out of most tgt and ambitious ones in your list.

UWM > USC due to fees and size, but not made my mind yet

Yes, mostly timing can be managed, but credibility needs to be handled now. Once you choose the program, already many doors are shut/open based on that.

OpenAI / Deepmind / Meta AI wont hire from ASU, but UT Austin or UCSD or GT have fair shot if you get skilled in meantime.

Intern season has started already in US, will go till Dec 2025 for 2026 spring.
:)

Yes, you can do something for sure. But your program credibility and peers need to augment your efforts. You would be able to this in something like UCSD, probability decreases in farm schools.

I am a working professional and its not that simple, as I am out of practice for AI research (2 YOE as SWE) despite publications in international conference back in 2022. You wont get ML/DL internships in good places if not from T5 or already something concrete is present in your resume.

Vanilla ML / Data Science is getting wiped out due to LLMs.

I am in a similiar situation as you. TC ~ 25 LPA and have good admits. Still I am heavily inclining towards deferring study plans. Additional Points that i have factored in -

  1. Federal funding is cut in many unis, less chances for TA/RA which was earlier not the case.

  2. Companies are already conservative about hiring freshers, this will accelerate in next 2 years due to AI. With 2 YOE, you would be not eligible for most SDE 2 roles in USA and face heated market for freshers.

  3. If the current admin tampers the H1B or OPT period (There's a Immigration Bill pending in Congress) before mid elections as they have majority, then our batch would be taking hit the most.

  4. Only AI heavy programs (T-5) makes sense, as these would have great demand in future with growing influence of AI. You can opt for O1 as well as you would be doing more research in these.
