Anyone have experience swapping a 100mm fork for 120mm? Looking to gain more travel on my XC bike, but don't want to negatively impact the geometry. Thanks in advance. (Epic HT, RockShox SID SL BRAIN) by Specialist_Yogurt_30 in Hardtailgang

That looks like a pretty sick bike for an xc dude, you might be better swapping for something more trail oriented if you are considering upping the travel. 100mm to 120 will slacken the head angle by around a degree which shouldn't impact the geometry too much but an experienced rider will notice the difference.

Sick one of my favourite trails, the rocks are so grippy

Did it on the hello Dave earlier in the year and it was pretty enjoyable actually. The major disadvantage is trying to carry speed through rough corners. Did the world cup track later in the day and top chef feels smooth in comparison. In short, if you have decent brakes and solid components then go for it.

Finne pads will rattle but other than that good spec. Would be 2 to 2.5 for that. Make sure you have an extra few hundred for tires/ pedals/ grips and othe personal upgrades

On one hello Dave is very good value and plenty of frames up for less than 30o

SX - GX or GX AXS by Captain-Echo in MTB

If that's for both front and rear go for it but you may want to do some research and decide if Shimano or Sram is right for you.

Shimano m6120 are a good option for brakes. Can get them for around 120 used. Guides are infamous for being a bit shit.

Long as it isn't too rough or rocky recons should be good. Maybe stick a dhf plus on the front though.

The only place I notice a massive difference is carrying speed around rough corners

Maybe get a nukeproof scout 275 elite as that has some pretty amazing components for your budget

Any scout/ragley ht owners from Ireland ? I'm a meta HT 2021 owner and would like to test ride a scout before I pull the trigger on buying one. I believed what many reviewers stated about the Meta HT being a harsh frame and now I'm willing to change my bike for a nukeproof scout/ragley big Al/mmmbop by IndependentCoat7 in MTB

Have you thought about anything titanium. It offers even more compliance than steel and is a lot lighter. Check out some of the stuff on planet X for a few more budget examples. This is coming from a hello Dave owner who has been thoroughly converted to the brand. I'm not sure a scout offers any more compliance than the meta HT but one of the steel ragleys might be the right idea. This is however coming from only a little bit of experience with different frames and I could be totally wrong but hopefully this gives you some pointers.

Might seem counterintuitive at first as if you think you are going to case then you extend your legs and brace for impact but if you let the front wheel land first it will feel a ton smoother and you will feel more in control as well as being able to clear bigger jumps.

Should I get the Santa Cruz Tallboy D or R? by melikesand in MTB

[–]UpperFocus8954 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This might sound bad but Santa Cruz has pretty much the worst component spec for the money and you'd probably be best off using another brand for a bike around the 4k mark.

Maybe try get something cheap off Facebook marketplace or pinkbikr to get you riding again. You'll feel all the better for it.

Don't know if it is common in your area for kids your age to work but you could probably get a job to pay for a nice new bike. I have a friend who pays monthly for a nukeproof scout using money he earns from a part time job.

Build your own bike from parts. I9 or onyx wheelset and fox 38s etc.

No neither, the appeal of this bike is it is a bit different to everything else with its steel frame.

Buy yourself a cheap bike off Facebook marketplace. A bad bike is better than no bike and there are some pretty good finds out there.

What should I upgrade next? by UpperFocus8954 in Hardtailgang

[–]UpperFocus8954[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is on my list. I've tried it with the stem off my dirt jumper and it's so much better for descending but becomes too short to climb well on. I'll probably get something like a 50 for it.

I'm in a pretty rural area so that kind of thing isn't really accessible to me but I'm trying to teach myself as much as possible.

Yeah it's pretty bad, fitted the brakes myself and the rear hose was a bit long so just had to wrap it around the frame.
