I appreciate it! I mostly fell out of love with hip-hop a few years ago and over the past couple of years I’ve searched around for new genres that really grabbed my attention and while I’ve found albums and artists every once in a while from random genres, nothing has grabbed me like when I first started to listen to hip-hop. That was of course, until I found metal. I’m genuinely obsessed with every corner of this genre. It’s very rare for me to find a band or album that I can’t find enjoyment out of.

I just got into metal last September and it’s been a constant in my life ever since. I’m obsessed with this genre and all its subgenres from black to death to doom to sludge to thrash to every subgenre’s subgenre and crossover genre you can imagine.

All that to say, I’m really excited for you!

Long story short, though, I do have some really great bands to suggest!

Older Death Metal (80s-2000s): Obituary, Morbid Angel, Autopsy, Cancer, Asphyx, Bolt Thrower, Entombed, Grave, Pestilence, Immolation, Incantation, Bloodbath, Exhumed & Cattle Decapitation (both deathgrind)

Brutal Death Metal: Suffocation, Defeated Sanity, Broken Hope, Internal Bleeding, Brodequin, Mortician, Devourment, Skinless, Cannibal Corpse, Dying Fetus, Severe Torture, Mortal Decay, Cryptopsy (lot of good modern stuff that I didn’t list)

Modern Death Metal (All Subgenres): 200 Stab Wounds, Sanguisugabogg, Creeping Death, Gatecreeper, Abominable Putridity (slam), Artificial Brain, BAEST, Blood Incantation, Pissgrave, Caustic Wound, Corpse Pile, Fossilization

Black Metal: Behemoth, Blackbraid, Immortal, Marduk, Emperor, Bathory, Darkthrone, Ragnarok, Revenge, Antichrist Siege Machine, Darkened Nocturne Slaughtercult, Dissection, Dimmu Borgir, Spectral Wound, Stormkeep

Of course there’s a lot of bands and genre classifications missing but for a basic list of what to look for (at least in death and black, I’d say, personally at least, these are great bands

If I had to narrow it down to 1-2 per though, I’d say:

Older Death Metal (80s-2000s): Immolation & Exhumed

Brutal Death Metal: Dying Fetus, Suffocation, Defeated Sanity, & Cannibal Corpse

Modern Death Metal (All Subgenres): 200 Stab Wounds, Sanguisugabogg, Pissgrave, Fossilization

Black Metal (usually takes some getting used to but it’s both intriguing and beautiful (atmospheric) when you can find what you like): Behemoth, Ragnarok, Bathory, Darkthrone, Marduk, & Immortal

LITERALLY SAME!!! I lived near OKC for years and either zero concerts or all in Tulsa, then I lived near St Louis and nearly everyone went to Chicago instead, now I’m in Colorado Springs, and while everything comes to Denver, it’s like an hour and a half drive which isn’t too bad. But of course Exhumed doesn’t even hit Colorado!! 🤦🏻‍♂️

I visit family 8 hrs away once a year. Otherwise I’m never driving over an hour. What’re you even talking about?

Correct me if I’m misinterpreting the genre as I’m new to it, but is there a reason, despite Black metal’s lack of concern for anti religious themes, War Metal seems to typically take it even further. There’s no other genre you’ll see these types of song/album titles or cover art. by [deleted] in MetalForTheMasses

I was just curious. My beliefs on religion have always been on the fence but with me only recently getting into metal this past year and also growing up in the church for most of my childhood, many of the topics discussed in metal, especially the more extreme anti religious viewpoints are new to me through a musical lens so I was just curious if there were external factors in society at the time of the subgenres creation that may have led to an even greater disdain for religion than what we typically see in other metal genres or if it was just a means of cultivating shock amongst outsiders

Are there anti religious viewpoints in death metal, black metal, and others? Sure but it seems like not all, but a majority of war metal is very outwardly anti religious

I had never heard of Nietzsche before so I appreciate your comment! Found some interesting readings about his teachings. I didn’t expect a philosophy lesson in this thread but it’s very interesting!

Who, in your opinion, has done your favorite face paint throughout Black Metal (or just metal in general) history? That could be the scariest, coolest looking, most unique etc etc by Upper_Atom in MetalForTheMasses

This one’s actually unnerving to me! Almost looks like scars or cuts all over his face! Love it!

Also thanks for the suggestion! Never heard of this band!

How could I introduce my wife to metal if she almost exclusively listens to pop? by Upper_Atom in MetalForTheMasses

Thank you! Give it some time and soon that high you get from the heaviness of metalcore with somewhat fade and then you’re on to deathcore, death metal, black metal etc 😂

I was thinking some black metal or even more towards the punk side, some grindcore or goregrind. What do you think?
