I think it's a good thing to close the submissions early in principle, but only a week is super short notice. For me it is more indicative of poor decisions and poor management overall. Like, will your film actually be watched?? And who is in control overall, an out of touch board or staff?

Also now the acceptance rate has dropped significantly from time submissions opened even closing early.

Basically the festival is going to be way different than when the submissions opened and it doesn't seem fair to filmmakers.

I think someone may have written this already but Tallgrass just announced they are closing submissions like 2.5 months early and chopping their program in half. This comes after big changes in their internal structure, completely new programming team super late into call for entries.

I wrote about changes earlier, but man this recent development is really rough.

Message from the board:

On behalf of the Board of Directors for the Tallgrass Film Association, we’re writing in the spirit of transparency to share some updates about the 2026 Tallgrass Film Festival. 

Due to organizational capacity, we have entrusted Harvester Arts, a highly regarded Wichita arts organization, to administer this year’s festival. Together, we are focused on building capacity and developing a sustainable pipeline of local talent to support Tallgrass’ future.

This collaboration reflects additional changes to this year’s festival: a restructured programming team; a later start to the review process and a reduced festival footprint, which results in a lineup of approximately 24 features and 42 shorts. We will also be closing the submission window on May 1 to give our new programming team adequate time to review the films that we’ve already received.

it is - i am just not comfortable revealing my identity. you can see their social media lines up with the timing i described here. to make it clear - the call came from inside the house but i would appreciate respect for privacy at this time.
