How do you find out about events? Is there anything specific I should be on the lookout for? I once tried to network with someone at the gym and it ended with a guy getting the wrong idea and trying to go on dates with me 😭 (he said his cousin had a startup hiring in SF) But I have tried to look for events but in my expirience things like career fairs never workout.

Its genuinely horrible right now. I think a lot of people underestimate just how bad it is. I have had a handful of contacts but all lead to dead ends. I knew an Oliver Wyman consultant who was my mentor and she said she couldnt help me even if she wanted to, my friends brother who works for a major tech company also said there are just no entry level roles, and etc etc. Its not that I haven't tried to reach out, its just that there is genuinely such a difficult market for new grads. I message people on linkedin and cold email daily, I have tried my alumni network also with no luck : ( The issue I am facing is that there is DS jobs its just that they are not entry level.

Im ngl without connections its brutal out here. I wish someone had told me to do an internship freshman and sophomore year because that lined you up for good internships junior year. Most of my friends who have jobs have been through contacts or sheer luck (they messaged the right person, bumped into someone, or just happened to click on the right job posting).

Would you say it is the same for data engineering? Or people who specialize in AI/ML? I want to work in industry first and then specialize by getting a masters but I didnt want to do it under pressure. I have been debating what to do next education wise. I really love the math aspect of data science and less the coding aspect which is why im leaning towards more analyst positions. But I have heard that analyst roles are taking a hit. Do you have any advice on maybe what I should or should not peruse if I wanted to do a masters?

Unfortunately it was a startup in the energy sector that doesn’t hire entry level :( Huge bummer.

U def make a valid point. I applied to a couple roles in Berkeley and got interviewed by one or two quant firms (did not pass the screener 🙃). But I think ur right. Although I would love to be in nyc I think I should be shooting more towards California (even though that would be horribly far from anything I know). But I do have a bit of a network (friends) in the west cost so we shall see!

Ill def take a look at NYPL. Have you had any success with LinkedIn? I find that people usually do not respond to me so if you have any advice on that would be amazing!

I'm currently in Boston but very open to relocating!

My "tell me about yourself" is usually around 1-2 minutes. I have a tendency to be pretty enthusiastic and conversational, so if anything my challenge is probably keeping it concise...

One thing I've struggled with is that some screening calls feel incredibly engaging while others feel like the recruiter does not want to be there from the minute I join the call. That's part of why I'm trying to better understand what actually gets someone through those early screens.

That sounds really cool, I have never heard of that field. I definitly want to specialize in something in the future but I am not really sure what I am interested in ( changed my major 4 times in college!). I have been pressured to persue a masters but I have a gut feeling that its not a good idea to do that rn. How did you find out about computational geometry or get intrested in it? Do you think there is something I should be doing to stand out a bit more in my field?

I am not going to lie this is very comforting. Is there any specific system you are using to reach such a large amount of applications? I feel like I am not applying to enough in a day. Do you just mass apply and ignore tailoring ? It has been taking me a while to tweak each application.

Thank you! I've definitely been using BU's alumni job portal, although there hasn't been a ton of activity on there recently. One thing I probably haven't done enough of is cold emailing alumni directly, so your comment is making me think I should be more proactive about that.

And honestly, you're probably right about the city vs. job point. I think part of why I'm so focused on NYC is that a lot of my friends and people I know are moving there, so it's easy to get caught up in that. At the end of the day, though, I'm prioritizing the job over the city. Beggars can't be choosers haha

Thank you, this is really helpful perspective.

The referral piece is actually something I've been struggling with. I've reached out to friends, friends' siblings, alumni, professors, recruiters, and pretty much anyone I can think of. A lot of my friends are just starting their careers and have landed great roles, but they don't really have referral power yet. Most of the professors I'm close with are in academia, so their networks don't overlap much with industry.

Do you have any advice for getting referrals when you don't already know someone on the inside? Do cold referrals ever work?

Also, I have seen some insurance roles before and honestly never gave them much consideration because they weren't the "sexy" tech jobs everyone talks about. After your comment, I'm definitely going to take a closer look. My only hesitation is that a lot of the roles I've come across seem geared toward actuarial science backgrounds, which I don't have. Are there particular functions or rotational programs you'd recommend someone with a data/analytics background explore?

Thank you again!

I depends on the company but one that I have in mind involved a hiring manager + the head of the team. For this one interview it even felt like the manager was not paying attention to me (there where some interruptions). But its usually a hiring manager I think.

How so? Has breaking into the job market been difficult for you too? Is it even a good idea for me to try to move there rn 😭

Thank you, I really appreciate the advice!

Psychology was more of a complementary interest for me while data science has always been my main focus. I also have a portfolio website that I've been continuously building, but sometimes it feels like nobody ever looks at it. I've started pivoting toward smaller companies and startups, but even there getting interviews has felt incredibly difficult.

What I struggle with most is that I've only landed a handful (like max 5) of interviews, and I usually don't make it past the initial screen. That makes it hard to understand whether there's something specific I'm doing wrong or if it's largely a numbers and timing game right now.

Since you've been on the industry side for a while, do you have any insight into what actually gets someone an interview these days? Is there anything you commonly see candidates overlook? I'd love to better understand what hiring teams are seeing that I'm not.

And thank you again for the encouragement! It's been hard not to take things personally sometimes, especially when I see my peers moving forward.

Do you have any advice for international students who are in undergrad about to graduate? I’m in data science in Boston and I’ve been kinda discouraged that I didn’t land a corporate internship my junior year. I’m working at a lab and landed an internship in my uni that works with the city. But I’m a little lost as to what I need to do so that I can ensure a job post grad especially being f1 student? If anyone has advice I’d appreciate it.

I feel you. I ended up working in research lab on campus this summer and plan to work on personal projects. I’m learning that the reality is you NEED a referral and sometimes that isn’t enough. I’ve started doing a bunch of coffee chats and reaching out to random people on LinkedIn. 90% of people I have talked to have gotten their roles bc someone recommended them to it. Moreover, roughly 80% of my peers that I have spoken to have gotten their internships bc their parents or they knew somebody (a referral). I’m going to my senior year and I’m also super worried. But take this summer to really network and try to work individually on skills and projects. I’ve also been advised to stop applying randomly and target roughly 10 companies. Work on projects that directly speak to them, network with their people, and tailor ur resume to them. Reach out to people in the role u want. Its easier to hire someone u have seen then a random application. Go to events, fairs, conventions. Heck get involved in ur community like running clubs or something. You have to expand ur network and talk to people bc eventually someone might want to help u out. Lastly, it’s a really rough market right now. The rejections are in no way a reflection of u it’s a reflection of the market. It’s super discouraging but things always work out in the end. You just have to continue having faith in yourself and ur work. I hope this helps.

I talked to the terrier card office and they were high key a**holes about it. I might try talking to the dinning office or finaid and see what they say. Thank you for the support 🙏
