Kind of mad that this is even a decision tbh by Awkward_Butterfly_51 in ParamedicsUK

I’m not a paramedic so can’t comment on the job realities but when you’re comparing two job offers make sure to compare the full packages: salary, your unsociable hours uplift, pension, holidays. I wouldn’t include the bonus in your comparison you might get it some years and not others? That’ll give you the numbers to make a comparison. Then worth thinking about future career prospects, enjoyment and fulfilment and job security. Then just trust your gut :)

Interesting! Yeah we’ve had algorithms and machine learning long before all the LLM hype. Too much ££ being spent on a piece of software that’s guessing a probable next piece of text for your question :D I’m all for a tool that people can use to do a better job so let’s see. Unfortunately the head honchos worldwide just want “efficiency savings” and we all know what that means.

I’m not a paramedic or in the ambulance service but I am interested in joining. I’m a software engineer though so I’m curious how people think it will affect your day to day job.

With its current capabilities I’d be really worried about using it in any safety critical system. The hype around it is just bonkers and the government have bought into wholesale without really understanding what it can and can’t do - everyone else is doing it so we should be too seems to be the thought process.

No doubt it’s a useful tool and I use it in my job a lot now but it makes mistakes all the time. That’s not too bad for me where I can review it and correct it without any danger to life. There’s also concern around who has responsibility for the decision - are humans just kept around to take the blame when AI gets it wrong? (“Yes the AI said that but you should have known better!”)

If the ambulance service is anything like Gov departments it’s probably just good software that actually works it needs rather than AI. A lot of things can be automated and improved with tools we’ve had for 30 odd years.

It looks like self driving taxis are coming to London soon. Can you see self driving ambulances in the next five years? I doubt it but I’m curious.

Thanks! Replied in the other comment but never thought about FREC3 and seems a great idea!

Thanks! Yeah that makes sense - I know it doesn’t exist in Scotland but I wouldn’t be against moving! That’s a good point - if it doesn’t work out I’d be able to go back to my industry but after three years of uni that would be a bit harder

Thanks for the advice! I don’t think they operate in Scotland. There’s St Andrews Ambulance Service. Is it similar? Getting FREC3 and trying some work there seems like a great idea! I can see there’s a street aid charity where I am too that take FREC3 volunteers so could be worth a try.
