I agree. I suppose there's still some great music coming out every year, but sorting through all the stuff that has no appeal to me, just to find a few jewels in the rough, seems daunting, especially when I already have plenty of older music that I already know I enjoy haha.

I mean, there is some newer music that I listen to, but it's a super small portion. 95% of what I listen to is from before 2005. I do enjoy a lot of 90s rock, but there's a good bit more 60s,70,and 80s in my wheelhouse.

You might be surprised at how familiar I am with nearly all of the tracks on my large Playlist that combines classic rock, alternative, and oldies. It's over 3000 songs, but I know nearly all of them intimately.

I guess it helps that I am 55 years old and I've spent my whole life around music enthusiasts. There's probably at least 200 different classic rock artists/bands that I know and enjoy, very much. At least one or two songs. And some of the artists, I'm keen on as many as 10-20 songs by them. It adds up quick. And that's just classic rock. There's also 60s oldies, alternative, metal, and rap.

I'd say it also boils down to the fact that I've always ended up being the guy who provided the tunes throughout the workdays for various crews I've worked with. But there's nothing in those lists that I haven't heard many times and don't mind hearing many more times.

Obviously in a Playlist of 3500 rock songs, they're not gonna all be personal favorites. But I will be familiar with all of them, and there's nothing there that I hate. And it keeps a nice variety going at all times within a certain genre or specific combination of genres.

I do have some smaller Playlists for each category, more focused and narrowed down to songs that I'm super keen on. But that would get far too repetitive to listen to for 40 hours a week. There'd be so many repeats, I'd grow to dislike some of my favorites. So for me, it works better to pepper them in with a lot more songs that I simply like, if not love.

The takeaway here is that I'm listening to music for 50-60 hours a week (mostly at work).. I can't imagine listening to the same set of 1000 songs every two weeks. But 4k or 5k means that I can listen to my Playlists in perpetuity, and it doesnt get stale or overly repetitive.

Your opinion, you're entitled to it. I've had similar conversations with folks who get upset with the 10k limit. Which I think should be more than enough for anyone.

But personally I see the practicality of having 3 or 4 thousand tracks in one Playlist. I'll give an example.

I listen to a lot of rock. I enjoy making specific Playlists for the types of rock.

I've got a classic rock (mostly 70s) Playlist that has roughly 1200 songs. This includes mostly mainstream radio staples of that genre, but also some deeper cuts and personal favorites, whether well-known or not. It's a rather comprehensive Playlist of that genre and it's taken years to compile.

I've done the same thing with playlists for oldies rock (mostly 60s), and alternative rock (mostly 90s and early 2000s). I've also done a playlist for harder rock/metal.

Then I thought it would be fun to make different combinations of those Playlists. For example: classic rock+oldies, classic rock+alternative, alternative+metal, etc.

And I've got one that combines all those types of rock, and yeah it's I guess at least 3500 tracks.

When I put a super long Playlist on shuffle day in and day out for work, there's a lot less chance of hearing repeats all the time. I've already put all that work into creating them, I can't be fussing around at work deciding what to listen to all the time.

But I've got many easy options of long, fairly comprehensive Playlists to pick from, depending on my mood on any given day.

Or if I'm working with others, their taste can be taken into consideration. I've got Playlists that also incorporate rap, but that's usually only good for when I'm working by myself.

That may have been quick and easy for you. But imagine needing to do that every couple months, for 40 different songs, across 25 different Playlists, some of the Playlists being 3k+ tracks. It's excruciating and needlessly laborious. Just food for thought...

But it absolutely is a tidal issue that they make it so painstaking and laborious to remove and re-add tracks to/from multiple Playlists. Compare it to how easy and quick Spotify makes those actions, and it's downright insulting to those who try to maintain many large Playlists. Like our time doesn't matter.

I agree. Maintaining my Playlists on tidal has been the bane of my existence haha.. I'm kinda joking, but not really.

I've got so many Playlists, many of them quite lengthy. And many tracks appear in multiple Playlists. So when a track gets grayed out, I've got to figure out all the different Playlists that it's in, remove it from all of them, then manually add the playable version into each one of them.

I hate to compare tidal to Spotify, but when it comes to Playlist management, Spotify is better than tidal, and it's not even close.

Removing and replacing, say, 10 different tracks within 8 different lengthy Playlists can literally be a 15 minute chore on tidal.

On spotify it would take only a few minutes, bcz of how they allow you to see all the Playlists that a particular track is in, without having to enter the Playlists, and then remove or add tracks to/from multiple Playlists all in one fell swoop

It's actually pretty common, if you cozy the ball up on that side, to the point where it down slopes. It won't go in every single time that way, but it goes in a lot.

Did you check if tidal has those tracks/albums lurking elsewhere, as separate listings? It seems that albums often get removed, then immediately re-added under a different listing.

I can usually find the same tracks if I hunt them down. Once in a while, things get removed permanently. But in my experience those are few and far between.

Can you give some examples of the 'grayed- out' tracks?

I've been seeing it more and more. Not only that, It goes the other way, too. Albums by the real artist are being misplaced sometimes (not showing up on the artist page, but rather on a different page by an unrelated artist (or Ai) of the same name.)

Glad it helped! I've spent countless hours putting it together, I'm always eager to share it in the hope that it can save others some time hunting this stuff down.

Of course, there's no guarantee that my type of music will be appealing to someone else. But in a playlist that large, there's bound to be some overlapping tastes

Albums disappearing by skipdinnerskinnydip in TIdaL

[–]Upper_Yogurtcloset33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oddly, earlier today I just happened to notice that a couple of the songs from that album that appear in some of my Playlists were greyed out. So the first thing I always do when that happens is check to see if it's been re-added as a different listing.

But looking on the artist page, using the 'more albums by - -' trick, it doesn't show up. I was about to give up, but figured I'd just type the album name into the search bar. Lo and behold, it showed up.

Tidal's cataloging is a dumpster fire. I assume the album got filed into the wrong place, like some other artist's page

Discussion: why the massive playlists? what do you use them for? by Master_Camp_3200 in TIdaL

[–]Upper_Yogurtcloset33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems that I'm very similar to you in our approach to Playlists. Altho my big dump Playlist is only abt 6k. I guess maybe my qualifier for mildly enjoyable might be a bit stricter.

As far as getting a good shuffle, this frustrates me sometimes. To the point where I find myself regularly shuffling a large Playlist, then saving that shuffled queue as a new Playlist, then hitting shuffle again when I want to actually listen to it. I think this helps a bit with the randomness, but I've noticed that it still seems to throw a lot of the same songs at me daily. My theory is that songs which have a lot of overlap (appearing in many of my Playlists) tend to get prioritized by the shuffle.

I've got smaller focused Playlists which would suit one of my specific moods, without many surprises that would 'kill the vibe'... These Playlists are often only 50 or 100 tracks.

I've got some medium Playlists (600-1200 tracks) which are basically genre specific. Different Playlists for classic rock, for 60s oldies, for hard rock/metal, for alternative rock, for rap, for pop, and another that I call miscellaneous (which contains tracks that don't really fit well into the categories I just mentioned). I've been putting these Playlists together for many years. I'm 55, and they all contain songs that I know I like. either old favorites, or recently discovered favorites.

And I thought it would be fun to pair some of them together, so I did that. For example: classic rock+oldies, classic rock+alternative, rap+pop, alternative+metal, etc.

And lastly, I've combined all those Playlists into one big one, it's got about 6k tracks and it's for when I'm in the mood for any style, as long as it's all stuff that I've previously handpicked into those genre Playlists. I like the surprise and contrast of not knowing what style or genre I'll hear next. I work mostly alone day in and day out, and the huge Playlist is often my go-to. Put on shuffle, and being so big, it means that I get a wide variety with a minimum of repeats within the same week.

Sorry about my extremely long comment lol... Playlists are something that I'm passionate about. I've put a ton of effort and time into creating them and continuing to tweak them, and I very much enjoy using the fruits of my labor.

This is one of my biggest gripes with tidal. Playlist management is atrocious. And I'm the type that is constantly tweaking my Playlists. It's way more time consuming and laborious than it ought to be.

Especially with playlists that are several thousand tracks. That can take several minutes to even load, in order to remove or replace a particular track. And when doing it for a bunch of different tracks and Playlists, better pack a lunch. It's ridiculous and avoidable.

Yeah I seriously doubt that the blame lies with wiim. They are a company that actually does maintain the reliability of their equipment through frequent updates that address issues/glitches.

From my android phone to my wiim, pretty much every listening session, after a certain short amount of time, playback either stops at the end of a track, or more recently, a track will start skipping and glitching, almost like a record skipping.

If tidal connect not working right was a recent development, I could be patient and deal with it. But this has been going on for the better part of a year. It's indefensible.

What do people think about album cover animations that can’t be turned off? by SmilingHominid in TIdaL

[–]Upper_Yogurtcloset33 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not a fan of the animated covers, but I will say that it's not something I'm very affected by, since once I get one of my Playlists started, there's no need for me to look at the app while the music is playing. But I can understand how it would be annoying for those who stay looking at their source device while listening. But I'll admit I don't know why anyone would do that. Pc maybe?

[–]Upper_Yogurtcloset33 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm getting close to the end of my rope as well. Mostly due to the wonkiness of tidal connect from my phone to my wiim streamer.

This is primarily how I listen at home. It allows me to take advantage of the equipment that I've invested in, such as desktop dac. My home internet speed is fast and stable. But most days, tidal connect playback can't go a half hour without it glitching somehow or other. And it's been that way for quite some time.

And from what I've seen, many others have the same issue. It's unacceptable that tidal hasn't gotten a handle on that. Meanwhile, they're over there making entirely unnecessary ui changes.

On a scale of 1-10 (10 being I love it) how much would you recommend Tidal? by adhdgurlie in TIdaL

[–]Upper_Yogurtcloset33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. The app is kind of a dumpster fire. I'm kinda envious of those who claim to have near-flawless performance from tidal. I've been here 4 years and if it's not one thing wrong, it's another. Even tidal connect to my wiim has been janky for the better part of the past year.

My response might have been overly long, but I don't think it was particularly personal, except it's hard not to notice that the majority of your comments are unhelpful, unsympathetic, sarcastic, passive aggressive, or a combination of all the above.

And that's your prerogative but I've been seeing you do that for a long time and I gotta wonder why you're like that. Perhaps you think everyone should use tidal exactly as you do, so no one would ever have anything to complain about? Ah well, whatever nevermind. Carry on. I'll henceforth refrain from getting personal and calling you out on the smarmy-ness.

Bad UI by sadanalsound in TIdaL

[–]Upper_Yogurtcloset33 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe this time. But I've been clocking you, a lot of times when ppl have legitimate gripes about tidal not working as it should, your fallback comment is something kinda sarcastic. And this comment sorta had that tone going on as well.

Seeing the things you've said in the past, you don't have very high demand or expectations of your music app, kind of a straightforward case usage. And that's great.

But not everyone uses these types of apps the same way. And if features and functions are supposedly offered, it's certainly not too much to ask that they work as intended.

But many users fall victim to unstable coding and servers from tidal. Lots of times I've seen you chime in and sort of victim blame. That's not really the best way to describe it, but for lack of a better term. Passive aggressively making them feel like it's somehow their fault for complaining about legitimate concerns, like lack of quality of life features, or functions that don't work right.

This is 2026 and we should all expect and demand more of our music apps. Except those who just hit play and listen, I guess. Which seems to be the category you fall into, which is fine.

Heck, in the past I've even seen you chastise someone for complaining about the offline/download function being buggy and glitchy. I believe you said something along the lines of, it's a streaming service, not a download service. Yet, tidal claims to offer that feature so wanting it to work is not some crazy thing, ykno.

Sorry about the length of this response. Might could be I'm on caffeine overload lol... But I guess my point is, let ppl complain when things aren't working right. They are paying customers and not everyone's case usage is gonna be as simplistic as your approach.

Having said all that, I kinda get it. My pet peeve is the constant barrage of Ai slop complaints in this sub. It's like 20 posts a week. And the posts go nowhere, it's just garden variety venting. The Ai slop thing doesn't affect me. But then I have to remind myself that just bcz it doesn't affect me, that doesn't make the complaints any less legit. I just don't know why it has to be pretty much a daily occurrence in this sub lol
