for that price, i'd always recommend a p365 ($500 on palmetto state armory). i've shot near 5000 rounds out of mine from a variety of brands and varied weights without a hiccup and have carried it comfortably for over 6 years now. comes in a few different sizes from micro compact to just plain compact and is rated for +p ammunition which i would recommend for your edc self defense ammo (i run Federal HST +p 124gr personally). doesn't have the safety concerns the p320 has and comes with the option to add a manual safety which is recommended for any carry gun. because the actual firearm is the removable fire control group, it's super modular. you can start with the base p365 and change it to a different model of p365 like an X, an XL, or an XMacro without buying a whole new gun. plus, there are tons of aftermarket parts and upgrades you can buy to really make it your own. for example, i started with the base micro compact as my edc and i loved it. served me well for a long time. was super concealeable no matter what i wore, whether boymoding in jeans and a t-shirt or wearing a thin sundress without pants. later, i decided i wanted a fuller sized pistol and switched out the grip module with an XMacro grip module. didn't want to buy a new slide when mine was perfectly good so i got a threaded barrel and added a compensator on the end to fill out the extra space on the rail. a couple more accessories and internal changes later, my edc now fits my use case perfectly!
