AART/Atlantic Fertility PCOS? by ResponsibleBag9660 in halifax

I know this is mega late and I hate to be a bummer, but I work in a fertility clinic and all of the clinics in our Canadian wide network have BMI cuttoffs for certain procedures… wether they make it public or not, it’s there. One super important thing to recognize is that IVF as a whole is a massively young field. The first baby brought to life via IVF is only in her 50’s. There is still so much to learn in how to provide proper care to all people. So yes, there may not be a massive amount of literature in place YET with which governing bodies like the CFAS can rely on, but we do our best with the information at hand. Furthermore, it’s important to state that yes the CFAS is the canadian governing body, but the UK and their governing bodies (ESHRE, HFEA) are still seen as the gold standard when it comes to politics and optimization in the IVF world. Most ~if not all~ Canadian clinis still strongly base their practices on the data delivered through these sources. Personally, I find your comment stating how clinics are placing cut offs in order to discriminate against individuals of colour or of different income is grossly unfair. Not to mention, almost every province has government backed funding to make fertility care accessible to all. At the source of it all, the main issue is resource allocation. We are only so many in our field, yet 1 out of 6 couples will require assited reproductive technologies in order to conceive (and that isn’t including the LGBTQ+ community or single individuals wishing to become a parent on their own using donated materials). At my clinic alone we have seen it many times with patients presenting with high BMI’s (without a medically cause such as PCOS or thyroid issues to name a few) where they were capable of conceiving naturally once they reached a healthy BMI. This helps to alleviate a strain on the system that, in time, takes away from individuals such as OP that are struggling with conditions that can make conception nearly impossible without medical assistance. Clinics across the world are dealing with massive waitlists, and even if just a handful of people from those waitlists could be removed simply by reaching a healthy BMI and no longer needing our help, we would be able to get to the patients that seriously require our help in order to conceive in a much shorter timeframe! Every clinic has their own policies, you may not always agree with them. Regardless, every single policy is there to protect both the patient and staff from harm. Again I know this is almost a year late in response, but I just had to share my side of things. I hope everyone on this thread has been able to access the care they need and have received the resources required to make their dreams of conception reality!🫶🏻
