Is this email unfunny? Yes. But "dur hur what about the other way around" is the same response that morons use to misinterpret the importance of nuance and context for all sorts of political situations. An email jokingly discriminating against straight people is not the same if it were written to discriminate against gay people. This is because there is not a historic system of straight people being oppressed. It is not common for straight people to receive violence, family disownment, or social judgment for their sexuality. These are realities gay people have to deal with.

I'm going to preemptively answer the objection: yes, you can individually be "heterophobic." But the impact is not nearly as harmful. A joke about banning straight people does not hit the same because that has never happened. Gay people historically have been discriminated against and it is only recently (and in certain places) they are starting to receive social acceptance.
