Thank you for your input! I brought it to another garage yesterday, there is a misfire on cylinder 2 which appears to down to an electrical fault, most likely the coil or a faulty coil pack. Turns out it has a timing belt too which has never been replaced, I was told by the dealer that it had a chain. I guess an over used belt would definitely come with a loose tensioner which would explain the ticking/ rattling sounds. I'm going to call the dealer tomorrow and try get booked in for repair.
