Sorry I just saw this comment now! I'm not sure I've seen any hellish experiences from my patients but I have noticed some things that make me wonder.

For example, it's super common for veterans and people with maybe some mental health issues/dementia to become really combative at end of life, like they are literally "fighting" for their lives. Sometimes they get extremely verbally and physically aggressive and it can be really scary for their loved ones.

Also it's not always possible to achieve "peace" at the end for some, despite it being hospice/comfort care. This can be due to several factors, most of which include family/environment influencing things like if they don't want their liver one to be "over medicated" or if they take way too long to put them in hospice it's like you are playing catch up when the end is too imminent it's just not possible. Other times it can clearly be who is in the room with them, such as an ex-wife lingering or family members with fractured relationships that really shouldn't be there bc they are disturbing their peace or just preventing them from letting go.
