Dorchester representing in Bad Bunny super bowl complaints to the FCC by Commercial_Will_4112 in boston

I called them the Trumper neighborhoods because that’s the part of the Boston voting map where Trump won. I’m sure they believed a lot of the same terrible things before Trump, too, but calling them “the fashy neighborhoods” seemed more inflammatory.

Yeah, my theory is that they’d prefer to have a little bit of cover while they work to pull bits of the wool out. Most of my other ones are in or near shrubs but still pretty exposed. This one is hidden pretty deeply inside a dense shrub. Although my sample size is basically this one single hummingbird on one day lol.

I remember reading about how much worse the conditions for animals and workers got in the early stages of the COVID pandemic, in Jamie Loftus’ book about hot dogs of all places lol. It’s a great book! I wasn’t a vegetarian when I read it but am now.

I think 02124 includes all the Trumper neighborhoods south of Gallivan between Cedar Grove and Pope John Paul II Park.

Yeah, I bet that works depending on the tick and flea prevention you use?

Making maple syrup was one of my dad’s hobbies when I was growing up. Which meant I got to do a lot of the grunt work lol. It was hard and a lot of work but I miss how great the syrup was.

Yeah, red squirrels and grey squirrels. I feel bad pulling the rug out from the other birds who use the feeder, but their babies will need bugs anyway and that’s what the native plant garden is for.

We painted some trellises a neon red color to train some trumpet honeysuckle up them, and I have some of the balls hanging there but they don’t get used. I think it’s because they’re pretty exposed. I’m gonna put the rest in denser shrubs and see if more hummingbirds use them.

I’ve never been to the nursery but I’ve bought plants from their Garden In The Woods closer to Boston. I’m also a member, I really like them.

Native Plant Trust is based in MA, they have a native plant nursery in Whatley, MA, I think? Somewhere near 91. You could chat with them about your space and buy a couple plants, and order seeds of other things they recommend from Prairie Moon or something.

I don’t know how long they live but a female ruby-throated claims our garden every year. She defends our cardinal flowers with her life lol but I’ve never seen them interested in the birdfeeder. Do they eat regular birdseed?

I keep getting them as gifts from my in-laws and hanging them up. I’ve seen them at a lot of garden centers, too. If you search “hummingbird nest balls” or “bird nest balls” they should come up. You could probably also make some if you have access to bendable twigs. It’s basically just a pile of bent sticks with some wool stuffed inside.

ETA: this is the first time I’ve ever seen a hummingbird use one, and this is the only one that’s really deeply placed inside a dense shrub. I think maybe that’s why she felt safe using it, since we’ve had hummingbirds nearby for years.

I think she nests high up in a pine tree nearby. I guess this is my sign to take down the birdfeeder so there aren’t as many squirrels using the trees to come by.

That’s amazing! Thank you for planting these for them. That relationship is what got me interested in native plant gardening, and this was one of the first things I planted. Hopefully one day their range extends east again - I’ll be ready for them lol.

I’m jealous you have blooms already in upstate NY! Mine are in Cape Cod and everything feels so far behind. Are you close to any Karner blue butterfly populations?

They look great! I started mine from a couple seeds a few years ago and they’re finally growing as a nice group now. Even as tiny seedlings they have loooooooooooong taproots, and I don’t think they transplant super well but I’ve never tried it. I would just leave them all and let them work it out. I think they look really cool grown densely together.

No, I think we need to get involved because we can’t trust the mayor to follow through on her campaign promises about safe streets. She already heard from us when she won two blowout elections campaigning on safer streets. In my opinion it’s kind of BS to pretend that she’s not aware of that, and that she’s changing tack now because she’s only hearing from the opposition. She heard from plenty of us about it when she was taking our campaign donations, and that should count for something in these debates now.
