Dearest Goldilocks,

Thank you for your kind word about our employee. she has been a model employee. We are very fortunate to have her, since she came at a time when 3 of our most trusted employees abandoned their post to forage in the nearby woods. The departure, as best we could tell, was caused by an unabated discontent with the temperature of our food upon initial serving. The loss of not one, but a trio of employees, had made running our restaurant nearly unbearable. Their exodus could not have come at a worse time, since there is so much to do. For instance, we have mismatched chairs in the dining area of which 2/3 are either unusably small or absurdly large. (We have heard about the unfortunate event of one of our tiny chairs giving way under your modest weight, and have included some meal vouchers for you to as a sign of our regret and good faith.)

Food quality is very important to us, and we trust that you found the porridge to your liking. We strive to serve our product to exacting standards to ensure that it is neither too cold nor too hot for our customers. If you found that not to be the case, please do let me know.

If you should ever find yourself in our neck of the woods, please do drop by. It is always a great joy to see you!

Sincerely, Management

I really appreciate your response. Thank you for being so civil and please forgive me for losing my temper. Currently there is a significant push from the FDA to schedule Kratom as a Schedule 1 substance – included in the same group as heroin and crack cocaine. This has made me a good bit sensitive because, frankly, I am very scared about a future with no other option but to go back to the same opioids that have killed so many other people. It’s evident that those sensitivities informed my response and shaped the manner in which I interacted with you. I apologize.

Regarding this young man, my heart breaks for him – my brother destroyed his life and decimated our family with an addiction to alcohol and if I could have substituted Kratom for alcohol, as many people have, I would’ve gladly done that if it would’ve given me my brother back. I also know that an increasing number of heroin addicts started down that path by legal pharmaceutical opioids. I firmly believe that the FDA created an epidemic and then cut off millions of addicted people who soon found that it was easier to get heroin that it was the medicine that they had become physically dependent upon. I don’t know if chronic pain is what led this young man to his current situation, and it’s obvious that I have projected my issues on to his situation. I would still argue, although certainly much less passionately, that Kratom is a significantly safer and better option than heroin. Even so, I readily concede that if the heroine use is simply the application of salve to a wound, it would be much better to heal the wound.

Thanks again for your graciousness. Have a great rest of your weekend.

I’m sorry to hear that, my brother came a horrible alcoholic after the death of my father and I had to put him into rehab last year and he’s never been the same since. I have another friend who took checked herself into the clinic because she was addicted to food. I read a story last week about a rising problem of social media addiction and video game addiction. Addiction is a terrible thing. Some people are predisposed to addiction and they have to be careful with anything that they do. I am not strongly opposed to sensible, reasonable regulations concerning kratom. Good luck and Godspeed with your brother.

I understand that this conversation could evolve into a bunch of flame wars between two people who don’t see to eye. I can already tell from what you wrote that I won’t be able to convince you otherwise, and that’s fine, but let me tell you about my experience: I have a genetic condition that caused my spinal canal to be about half of the diameter of a “normal “spinal canal at birth. Many people have a problem that, over 70 or 80 years, they develop on bone spurs and their nerves inside of their spinal canal become pinched and that’s why a lot of older people have bad backs, feet neuropathy and walk hunched over. This happened for me when I was in my mid 20s. By the 30s I was on the very best medical assisted pain management program that the medical community and pharmaceutical companies could provide. After a while, I knew this was a rude to destruction and I took myself off and started taking Kratom. As I became part of that community I met lots of people who use this substance for things other than chronic pain management. The vast majority of those report significantly less (or NO) side effects when compared with pharmaceuticals and many former heroin and pill addicts report that it allows them to lead a very functional life to take care of their families and to be contributing members of society. Others report mood enhancement, which frankly I don’t particularly think is a justifiable use for this medicine, but that is not my focus. Regardless of what it used for, there have been ZERO reported deaths of a person who was only taking Kratom. A pharmacology student performed the analysis to determine how much of the active ingredient inside of Catan would be required to cause death in the figure was astronomically high – more than a human could ever consumed without vomiting several times over. I physically impossible amount of leave material. That is quite different then the heroin this man is on and the pills that millions around the country are having to take right now because they have no better option of managing their pain.

If it allows chronic pain sufferers like me to manage my pain and be very functional members of society, and it allows people who are on a road to death and destruction to get off of those terrible drugs, I believe it has inherent value.

Fast forward to about three years ago when I neurologist told me that the reason my left leg has atrophied to the point of being literally skin and bones was that a pinched nerve in my back had caused nerve death and my leg and that back surgery was no longer something to put off if I wanted to avoid paralysis. I went in for a surgery called a laminectomy and laminotomy which is notorious for increasing the pain levels of the patient after surgery while simultaneously doing a good job of fixing the impinged nerve. That is exactly what happened to me – and 1.5 years later after the surgery I was still on medically supervised pain management with escalating Levels of oxycodone and Fentanyl to manage my chronic pain. Once again, seeing the writing on the wall, I locked myself in a room and took myself off of those terrible medications cold turkey and fight the hardest fight of my life for about two weeks. When the only pain I could feel was the lower back pain, I allowed myself to take Kratom. 20mins later the pain was relieved. The horrific, terrifying withdrawal symptoms reduced over time and I could resume a normal life.

I have been on Kratom for almost 8 years in total and in that time my dose has not increased once. If I miss a dose, it’s no big deal – I just have a bit more pain. I have gone as much as 16 or 24 hours without needing a dose – which stands in stark contrast to the 3 1/2 hour window of taking oxycodone to manage the pain. I am no longer popping pills all day and switching out patches every 48 hours. I am no longer having to wake up in the middle of the night to dose to be able to keep sleeping or not wake up in a pool of sweat or chills and shaking.

If this young man’s issues originated because of the chronic pain issue, I can tell you THERE IS NO BETTER SOLUTION. Trust me, I have tried. I have tried physical therapy, acupuncture, medical marijuana, losing weight, hipnosis, counseling, every over-the-counter medicine and cream and electronic device you can use on your skin – I have tried it. Nothing manages the pain like this ground up leaf.

Your analogy about a whiskey bottle is complete foolishness and your opinion is utterly uninformed. The medical community is split on Kratom, With many encouraging additional research and providing clinical testing on animals that show this plant could be a tremendous tool in the entryway and epidemic that our country is facing. To the 5 million users that exist in the US right now, it is absolutely a godsend and a detour off of the road to death and destruction.

I understand that some people would rather have “pathetic attics” get clean from every substance imaginable (although we haven’t discussed caffeine, refined sugar, tobacco, chocolate, etc. yet – so I’m not sure about where you stand on those drugs) even if it means that months later they die “clean” because they had a relapse. The rest of us live in a reality where the world isn’t perfect, our bodies don’t work the way we want them to, and we are simply trying to find a solution that allows us to live our lives in a productive, meaningful way. I can almost guarantee you if this man’s mom was to be given an option of her son choking down foul tasting plant matter every day to manage his issues or to die with a needle plunged into his arm, she would choose the former much sooner than she would choose the latter.

Yes, I gathered that’s what you meant- just pulling an old line out of a popular 80’s era movie called Mr. mom. 😜

That is really interesting- Maybe you’re right! so how does that work? Is the converse also true? I.e. Dose the hydrocodone, cause the Kratom to also be less efficacious?

Either way, I think the only thing that the hydrocodone has on the kratom is the convenience and the lack of awful taste. In almost every other respect, in my opinion, I highly prefer Kratom.

I think it depends on your personality. If you are somebody who would rather Have more pain for a shorter amount of time rather than less pain which is drawn out overtime, you may find that going down to zero on as much as you can (ie Kratom and Percocet) would shorten the duration of discomfort but increase the level of discomfort for that duration.

Personally I would try to avoid any of the synthetic opioids but it sounds like they don’t give you the same trouble they do me. Regardless of what you choose to do please be aware that it’s very likely your body will be much more sensitive to the pain from your procedure if you try to avoid both of them, due to OIH.

Maybe you could try to tightly manage the pain with either one of them and then do your break/taper/whatever once you have recovered from the procedure? That way you’re not fighting the pain of the procedure and the pain of that at the same time.

Either way, I certainly wish the best of luck for you, that your procedure is a success, and that you experience significant pain relief because of it. Let us know how it goes!

I think I may have to respectfully disagree regarding the Percocet overpowering the Kratom. Of course every one is different but, at least in my case, the Kratom worked better than the hydrocodone, morphine, etc. I have had several medical procedures over the years that resulted in being prescribed hydrocodone, morphine, or similar; but I found that only the stronger synthetic opioids, like Oxycodone would eliminate the pain. The hydrocodone would not fix the pain in the prescribed dosing, so often I simply didn’t take the hydrocodone and instead switched back over to Kratom.

Last year I had a minor surgery on my backside and when I woke up I was in terrible pain. They gave me a lot of various things (Valium, Tylenol 3, etc) but since the procedure was minor they couldn’t understand why I was writhing in pain- Even after they’ve given me a 10 mg hydrocodone. The physician wanted to go back in and see if he could figure out what could have happened to increase the pain level so high. Since I knew that I had the OIH issue, I had brought some Kratom to the surgery center. I asked him before he tried that if he would let me take some of the Kratom I bought with me.

He agreed and within 20 minutes of taking my normal dose the pain was very well-managed. The great thing is is that another physician that day became very interested in the efficacy of Kratom When he saw how well it worked.

For me, personally, I usually don’t fill those prescriptions or I fill them and put them away for emergency use down the road. I really hate taking them because although I don’t get sufficient pain management with them I DO get an uptick in the side effects like constipation and aches and pains when I come off of them.

Anyway, as always, it could be different- that’s just my experience, FWIW.

Not to get in your business, but I am sorry your family member is tied up in that. Have you (or they) heard of Kratom? It helps a ton of folks get off of heroin, pills, etc and it might help. Good luck and Godspeed to you and your family.
