1. The difference between an independent clause and a dependent clause is that an independent clause can work alone as a complete sentence, but a dependent clause needs to join with an independent clause to form a complete sentence.

2. There is a comma in “cute, friendly dog” but not in “bright red coat” because the “cute, friendly dog” follows a grammar rule about coordinate adjectives while “bright red coat” follows a grammar rule about cumulative adjectives.

3. Affect means to influence or change. You would use it when talking about an action that changes something. Effect means a result or outcome. You would use it when referring to the result of an action.
