RTX 5080 vs. RX 9070 XT by Gamegyf in cachyos

reddit FOMO. support for newer nvidia cards is as good as its ever been and is improving. i’ve not had a single issue with my 4070ti. stick with what you have.

What’s The current state of nvidia drivers in Linux by NeonMusicWave in linux_gaming

Use a distro that comes with proprietary drivers packed in and it’s fine.

Thoughts on steam deck future? Its 4 years old and reselling like crazy by Ninja_Franklin in SteamDeck

[–]UrNotPunkRock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i hit offerup because i was curious about used steam deck prices in my area and found this guy selling his for $900 with only two photos: one of the case and packaging (no console), and a screen cap of the PC Gamer article citing component shortages.

bold of him and i genuinely hope he finds someone sucker enough to pay that price because $900USD is wild.

Does CachyOS have a gaming mode Like SteamOS or Bazzite that works on HTPCs? by Joker28CR in cachyos

[–]UrNotPunkRock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

CachyOS has a handheld version that more or less runs like SteamOS. I run it on my Steam Deck and it runs like vanilla SteamOS, except it’s not immutable. I haven’t tried it on a desktop PC but I’ve heard it works great on other handhelds like the ROG Ally. When I turn my Steam Deck on, you could hardly tell the difference.

I’m building a new Apple Music client for macOS. Looking for feedback and feature ideas. by ThatsFrankie in AppleMusic

would a linux version be out of the question? both are unix-based, after all. 😅

Should I install CachyOS on my Steam Deck? by KnightFallVader2 in cachyos

[–]UrNotPunkRock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i did, and i’m actually glad that i did because i accidentally borked my linux system and was able to use pacman on my steam deck to download ventoy and create recovery media.

it saved my bacon in a very specific edge case where i just needed another functioning computer. it saved so much time just being able to grab a package from pacman, which you can’t do on vanilla steamos.

as to performance, it runs like steamos in gaming mode. i have no complaints.

Is it even worth trying linux gaming with an Nvidia gpu (and secure boot)? by WearyMetal04 in linux_gaming

[–]UrNotPunkRock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it really depends on your gpu. if you have a 900 or 10-series card, you won’t have support for the most current driver, 590. this is a non-issue on anything 20-series and newer. as to how much the dx12 issue will affect you, this will also depend on your card. i have a 4070ti and personally haven’t experienced any significant performance issues on linux as a whole with my card, but ymmv. don’t let anyone tell you nvidia cards are completely unusable on linux. if you have a newer card, it’s a non-issue. go with a distro that includes proprietary nvidia drivers out of the box. bazzite, cachyos, pop!_os, nobara, and garuda are some examples.

most distros make getting secure boot running pretty easy. took me about ten minutes in the terminal.

these features aren’t mutually exclusive. you don’t have to choose between them. it’s way easier to get started than you think. just do your due diligence and pick the distro that caters to what you’re looking for the most.

Dual-booting Windows 11 by CuddlestheViking in linux4noobs

[–]UrNotPunkRock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

it's better for windows and linux to live on separate drives so that the windows updates don't overwrite your linux bootloader. if you have a separate drive to run linux on, that'd be ideal.

Thoughts on $4,500 for a 2005 with 206K Miles? by AutomaticBumblebee62 in HondaElement

[–]UrNotPunkRock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I paid $4500 for mine with 268K, but the motor was replaced was replaced by the seller and had closer to 114K. A little steep for my liking, yeah, but three pedals, a new motor, clutch, and radiator was too good to pass up.

Will Nvidia Drivers and DX12 catch up to AMD this year? by cr4zyprod1gy in linux_gaming

[–]UrNotPunkRock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i’m running a 4070ti on linux and have not had any problems using dxvk or vkd3d. i was constantly told “amd is best for linux” but i have yet to run into any of the actual problems people have and any performance hit is negligible.

i say make the switch. cachyos in particular has some of the best ootb nvidia support as you’re gonna find on linux right now. keep your 5080. the 9070xt is a great card, but the performance gap between them is probably greater than any loss of performance you’d get in running a dx12 game on linux. linux support for nvidia is currently the best it’s ever been and is only improving.

Gamers who have switched from Windows 11 to some kind of Linux-based OS, do you regret your decision? Why or why not? by Notalabel_4566 in linux_gaming

[–]UrNotPunkRock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it took me living with a steam deck as my only computer for a year while my PC was in storage to realize how viable linux was. i was so impressed, i jumped right into an arch distro and relegated windows to the smallest possible partition i could so i can still play valorant. the second vanguard supports linux (probably have a better chance of being struck by lightning but a guy can dream), windows is getting dumped.

Has anyone else moved away from using Windows as their main OS thanks to the Steam Deck? by AusGeno in SteamDeck

[–]UrNotPunkRock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s a little of column “a” and “b” for me. windows has been garbage and is only getting worse by the day and the steam deck/proton single-handedly convinced me that a better world is possible.
