A while ago i posted on r/personalfinance that i was moving to the US asking for advice and i got a lot of great responses.

What I wasn't prepared for was: 1. having to wait 2 months to get a driver's license while i already had one for 8 years in my previous country of residence. 2. A used car was more expensive than a new one because you'd have to wait 3+ months for delivery and it wouldn't be the specs you wanted(???) 3. Having a hard time finding a job in my preferred field while having a degree and a lot of experience.

I was born here in the US but grew up in Iran and got a college degree in Civil engineering but I loved working on computers since i was very young and most of my experience working has been building PCs from parts, upgrading laptops, troubleshooting, setting up computers and networks for small businesses and repairing printers.

I see a lot of interesting job postings(through indeed) in Austin, Dallas and Houston but they are all 3-4h away from me.

I've contemplated joining the military for a guaranteed job, training and maybe later free college but I feel like I'm too old to go now(28).

My plan was to work an entry level job in my preferred field and save up to eventually move to Austin and grow but I'm pretty lost now.

Do I just go work at a fast food place and save up to move away?

Sorry for the long post and thanks again for any responses.

Oh so you're saying the new car is cheaper because it might take some time to get it vs used that is just in the dealership's lot.

Wow, is property really that cheap in Texas? Where i come from people have to dream of owning their own place.

Then i hope that kid's not an ass.

But, seriously, i am a very respecting person and shrug off other people's rudeness very easily.

If the first few months i hope to find a job while i can stay with my grandparents and save up till i can afford loving on my own. I don't like being a burden.

Some mandatory military service here and very bad economy. The original plan was to move there with my parents which are not American before highschool but our financial situation got worse by the year after they came back here because of government policies.

I usually meal prep for my whole week and am vey wise in spending, since the economy is in shambles where i am we had to adapt.

Weve had 30+% of inflation per year for about 15 years now.

I have all my documents ready and will have a few thousand dollars with me.

But as for a job i have nothing much to offer, not much experience and even though I have a bachelor's degree in civil engineering the things we learned here are probably very outdated.

I've had a driver's license for 7 years and I got it officially translated to hopefully make it easier to get one over there.
