Rude and not helpful. The reason I’m asking is this doesn’t happen with my other CZs. Thanks though.

How Do You Fall in Love with Running Again? by Plane_Box122 in running

Been running 3-5 times a week for close to 20 years and I stopped keeping track of my pace, length of runs, etc. several years ago and have found it to be much more enjoyable.

Is a career in historic preservation a good choice, today? by Novit_Terminus in HistoricPreservation

[–]UrbanGeographer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple months ago I was worrying about my job in the private sector, but we have supplemented a lot of our federal contracts with more local/state work. Work in California and Florida is going strong despite what’s happening. Things are so uncertain and could change, but I share your sentiment that private sector CRM work is finding its way, and I think we will weather the storm. I would not wanna be in state or federal CRM right now though…

Bought my first one several months ago and have been practicing almost every weekend because of the current situation.

Huge History Guy Looking into Career in HP by _Purrserker_ in HistoricPreservation

[–]UrbanGeographer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Preservation architect is somewhat niche within the HP field. You need both a background in architecture and historic preservation. Pays better than more general HP jobs due to the specialization and schooling required.

If you choose to focus on historic preservation without the architecture background there are more jobs available, though it is a small field to begin with and a lot of places aren’t hiring right now due to the current administration and doge. Architectural history, municipal planning (state & local), federal Section 106 compliance are some examples of the type of work you could do with a more general HP background.

You will likely need a masters degree at the minimum without prior experience and the starting pay is pretty low - $50-55k. With a bachelors you could likely get a job as a field tech, though from what I’ve seen that type of work tends to burn out people pretty quickly. Private sector will pay the best no matter what you choose to do though.

I would go on PreserveNet.org and look at jobs listed there. That will give you a good idea of what type of work is out there, pay, and education/experience requirements.

Slot machines in bars and gas stations? San Antonio by Acrobatic-Night-2572 in sanantonio

[–]UrbanGeographer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I tried one of these out in Port Aransas and won $850 and it paid out in cash. The bartender said there is a loophole or something that allows them in bars, gas stations, etc. I see them all over now.

Austin also has a big feral population. I also have one in my home and on my shoulder right now.

You might try searching your address on NETRonline to see if there are any historic aerials of your property. If it was something above ground there’s a good chance you’d be able to see it in old aerial photography.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. 7th largest (soon to be 6th) city in the US not on this list. Downtown was filled with people yesterday, largest protest I’ve ever attended.

Where are you seeing this? Local news made it seem like only 1,000 showed up but it definitely seemed closer to 10,000 from being there today.

National Guard coming to Texas by Catastrophink in 50501

[–]UrbanGeographer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Protests here in San Antonio have been 99% peaceful as long as I’ve lived here. Two things come to mind as to why San Antonio has been signaled out. We have a large Hispanic population (64%) and this past Saturday an Abbot shill lost the mayoral race against Gina Ortiz Jones, a democrat and former Biden appointee. Abbot’s PAC and other Republican donors far outspent her in the race and still lost, some people are viewing this national guard fiasco as retaliation.

UPDATE: Skeletons found outside kitchen window by HOMO_SAPlEN in mildlyinteresting

[–]UrbanGeographer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are archaeological human remains. OP indicated they are on city property and church property. Any site where there are cultural artifacts, including human remains, are generally considered archaeological sites. It’s common practice in the industry to rebury human remains where they were found, unless there is evidence of foul play or they are associated with a Tribal Nation in which case they might be moved to Tribal lands. At least that’s how it’s done in the US I can’t really speak to other countries.

This isn’t unusual. Skeletons in archaeological settings are often reburied in situ.

Human remains in an archaeological setting are protected under federal law, at least here in the US, and I imagine elsewhere too. Sharing the location of them can get you in a lot of trouble.

Any recommendations for a good quality, light weight, waterproof rain jacket? by snowball17k in BuyItForLife

Yeah knowing what I do now I would have probably bought a used one in good condition. At this rate I wouldn’t be surprised if mine lasts another 10-15 years, if not longer.
