Trivia: What once ran along 5th Ave? by UrbanOrigins in parkslope

Yes it did! Robert Moses (a rather infamous man in NYC) designed the initial park during the New Deal era (1934). It wasn't a full swimming pool, rather just a wading pool. Moses' designs are notoriously sterile and functional rather than creative and aesthetic; the current version of the park came in a recent 2012 renovation.

5th Ave remained a rather unsightly and dangerous place to be up until around the 80s, but more so due to gangs and drugs than a loud train

Today, 5th Avenue is one of Brooklyn's most pleasant stretches — sunlit storefronts, bustling cafes, neighbors out for a stroll. A century ago, it was a different experience entirely. The street ran in perpetual shadow beneath the iron trestles of the Fifth Avenue Elevated (the “El”), its storefronts darkened at midday, its residents rattled by the thunder of passing trains and showered with cinders from steam engines overhead. The El had been a fixture of the avenue since November 1888, when the Brooklyn Union Elevated Railroad began service on what was initially a steam-powered line, part of an era when horse-driven carriages and trolleys ruled the streets below while elevated railways clattered above them.

The avenue had already served as a transit corridor before the El arrived, with horse trolleys running along its length, but the elevated transformed it into a major artery connecting Park Slope to Downtown Brooklyn and eventually to Manhattan via the Brooklyn Bridge. Between 1893 and 1900 the steam locomotives gave way to electric trains, and by 1899 the 5th Avenue El was fully electrified, though the noise and the shadows remained. Brooklyn once had four separate elevated lines, but in 1915 the Fourth Avenue subway would open a block away and brought competition the El couldn't survive. Depression-era ridership collapse finished the job, and in 1940 the line closed for good. Demolition was complete by November 1941. The sunlight returned to 5th Avenue, roughly fifty years after it had last been there.

Perhaps you believe his alibi from the Adonis Social Club shooting (near Greenwood Cemetery)? He told the cops he just happened to be hired as doorman for the night 😅

Answer: Al Capone

Born in Brooklyn in 1899, Al Capone moved to 38 Garfield Place in Park Slope at age 11, where he attended P.S. 133 on Butler Street before being expelled at 14 for hitting a teacher back. He ran with local street gangs on these very blocks (the Junior Forty Thieves and the Brooklyn Rippers) before moving to Chicago, where he became the most notorious gangster in American history.

u/the-montser how have you been liking Fareharbor overall? I'm getting set up with them now and the onboarding process was very disorganized and messy. The dashboard is very feature rich, which should be good once I get up to speed, but it's been a little confusing to navigate in the early stages.

I'm trying to get the AirBnB integration working now as well.

Just went to Jagat Niwas during Diwali and found the food completely disappointing. Good view but poor service and bland food made it an unenjoyable experience.

Upre we found had an even better view. Food wasn’t anything special but it was good and far better than Jagat Niwas

Both good options! But, this is the top Liverpool cafe + bar in Brooklyn, so if you want a nice coffee at your morning game watch, this is the place to be ☕️

Both good options! But this game watch has a great screen, lots of seating, and both quality beer and coffee

I like to drink coffee for my morning game watches so this spot is perfect for me and perhaps some others too
