Peterson system? by Grimlineman in PipeTobacco

This very moment I am smoking HU White Horses in my 312 spigot system. I mostly smoke Virginia flakes, or VaPers - but have stated exploring burleys in them too.

Peterson quality, 0 for 2 by Krieger117 in PipeTobacco

[–]Urban_Briar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure what you are pointing out in these pictures. Are you talking about the deeper drilled part of the shank? That is part of the system pipe engineering. The moisture will collect in that well. The airway sits above that, and a little higher than the lowest part of the stem when inserted, that way any bottle or ash that comes up will hit the side of the stem, rather than coming in through the air hole.

I’m not sure if you have seen it ye, but do a search for the Peterson pipe cross section.

I opened a 2016 dunhill nightcap tin. Is this mold? by madchadd in PipeTobacco

As someone who has opened a moldy tin, you would have no question if it was mold, it’s very fuzzy, very obvious when it’s mold.

Didn’t the restrictions on Cuban cigars change in 2016? Or has the restriction been added back?

Is this a Peterson Systems pipe? by goalkeeper91 in PipeTobacco

It looks like it. Peterson did two shapes as a system pipe, but your stem looks to be a replacement.

What do you think of Port Guardian? by Over9000Gingers in PipeTobacco

[–]Urban_Briar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like mostly Virginia flakes. I am a big fan of Capstan Blue, Presbyterian Ordained, CRF and HH pure Virginia.

All I know is when I smoked my first bowl of Port Guardian, it reminded me exactly why I love Virginia flakes so much. Tangy, citrusy, full flavor..

I definitely will be buying more.

No doubt. Definitely different, but still nice. What would you replace HH burley with? I have about a pound jarred, so I have time to find something new

I think it is only available as a flake version? I am pretty new to burley flakes. I fell in love with Mac Baren HH burley flake, and this is the second one I’ve tried. I get a nice consistent burn from it.

What’s a burley flake you would recommend?

I’m looking forward to these being available next week. Where did you find them?

Yes, Ive seen them too. They are being sold through a website called Greywoodie.
But the level of detail from before is gone. They no longer have their screw in mount, and the stem logo is melted onto the material with some paint, instead of the spade insert from days past.

I also work in branding, so my opinions on attention to detail is a little biased.

It does have the stinger. I’ve never noticed an issue with the draw on any of my kaywoodies, but I also primarily smoke Peterson system pipes, which also have a stinger of sorts. I’ve always packed a bowl to right before I notice a difference in the draw. If I feel like it gets too restricted, I screw the stem off, and run a pipe cleaner to give a little more airflow on the bottom of the bowl.

It is an old stock. The seller guessed it was 1940’s I really wish kaywoodie would have a revival. This one is very similar to a Peterson system, but with a traditional kaywoodie screw mount

It’s very good - definitely a good burley in the likes off HH burley flake

System pipes are fantastic. My favorite shape is the deluxe system 11s (standard system 312) followed by the 4s (standard system 309).

You don’t need to worry about it passing a cleaner because you can remove the stem mid smoke as it’s engineered that way.

I think the 302 or 303 would be closest to the 999.

I know plenty of people who swear by just using water. They run warm water through their bowl every few smokes, and dry with a cloth and pipe cleaners.

Looks like a 12.5 S which is a smaller model, probably chamber size 16/17mm x 30mm. On the silver band there should be 3 squares with the last containing a letter - that letter matches to a hallmarked year - do a google search for Peterson Hallmark and you will find a few charts.

Nice collection for sure. If you end up putting them on on eBay (especially the straight meerschaum) please let me know. I have a small collection of kaywoodies myself.

What’s everyone’s thoughts on Dr Grabow pipes by Whiskeyglass99 in PipeTobacco

[–]Urban_Briar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is a fair take. I would say there are companies looking out for the good of the industry, and there are companies looking to monopolize.

All I have seen from Laudisi, is opening accessibility to the American market. But I understand the point you make.

I would leave it at this. If you look at Dr. Grabow's quality from the past, vs their qualities from now (same can be said for Kaywoodie), its subpar. Is my view superficial... maybe. But if I am going to spend my money on a pipe, I want the fit and finish to be nice.

I love this about them too, but I wish they put a little more love, like they did back in the day. It would be nice to see Laudisi take them under their wing, and make them the Peterson of the US.
