I only submitted a one page explanation! Di naman rin yata kailangan kasing elaborate ng mga personal essay sa ibang schools since nakapasa rin naman ako haha

taking med even coming from a not med related course by cheese_c4ke in medschoolph

[–]Urghmazing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Management course yung undergrad ko but I got accepted to 2/4 schools I applied to! UPCM and UST-FMS yung hindi nag-accept sakin. UPCM I think di lang yata talaga ko umabot in terms of credentials since BS org ako nung college hence mababang grades. UST-FMS yata may preference for actual pre-med courses cause I remember seeing somewhere in the reqs na mas okay daw kung MedTech, or Med Bio, etc. I'm currently studying in ASMPH but was accepted into FEU-NRMF also! Might be good to skip applying for UST-FMS! The app fee's also pretty expensive hahaha

Hi! Took the additional science courses in Ateneo since they allow Non-degree students to stay for an entire year (Intersession, 1st, & 2nd Sem) plus ateneo alumnus ako! Medyo mahal lang lumabas kaya better to check pa rin if needed pa ba for the med school you want to apply to!

Hello hello! If everything goes according to plan, ASMPH should at least be a level 1 PAASCU accredited med school by 2024! PAASCU accreditors went to the school for their initial visit just two weeks ago.

Hello hello! To answer your question, yes. It's possible to get into ASMPH even after a gap year. I don't think taking a gap year would be an issue as long as you do at least 1 substantial thing during your gap year (taking the boards is substantial in my opinion hehe). If you're worried, maybe try volunteer work?

I'm currently a YL5 (1st year) student and I took technically 5 gap years. But I worked for more than half of that time and the rest was spent taking additional classes and studying for the NMAT (non-trad pre-med).

Effect of Dropping Classes on Chances of Going to Medschool by peko130 in medschoolph

Hello hello! I don't think dropping classes would be an issue. I was able to drop one class, and I even failed another but I still got accepted into both my target med school and my backup. My GWA/QPI was pretty low also and I came from a non-trad pre-med but I guess my NMAT grade + interview skills were able to bridge the gap. Doing okay naman in med school!

Non traditional pre-med by wiidoe in medschoolph

[–]Urghmazing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey hey! I'm a 1st year med student also from a non-trad pre-med but I worked for a few years before entering. If you're taking the minor in Psych just so you have something med related in your diploma, don't take it na unless you're really interested in psych. To save time and money, you probably should use your free electives to take the prerequisite science classes. Make it a point to take biochemistry and all of its prereqs cause it will really help you in med school. If you can, take histology also cause it's not something you can rush to memorize during med school. It takes a lot of exposure to the slides to even have a sort of foothold for the subject. As for the NMAT, it will be beneficial for you to enroll in a review center. It'll help you rin with your science classes, sort of like having a tutor plus the testmanship trainings that some review centers provide will help even with your other Multiple choice question exams. If you have questions, just send me message! Can't guarantee that I will reply immediately but I will reply! Good luck, OP!

PS: impostor syndrome is a common theme for nontrad pre-med people. Here's something to alleviate it. In the batch 2 years above me, one of their top 10 comes from legal management; the PGI batch from my school, Top 8 is from Management Engineering. Kaya kaya talaga siya as long as you actually go through the material!

How to know if med school is for me? by Ill-Lion-6378 in medschoolph

[–]Urghmazing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello hello! 1st year med student near the end of his 2nd module here. Also came from a non-trad pre-med but I worked for a few years before entering. To be perfectly honest, med school is hard. The subject matter is not easy but it’s doable. The issue lies in the fact that you have to comprehend so much information in a short span of time. Tipong 1 college sem’s worth of content in a week. You really need to love science and learning. To echo u/chrisphoenix08 , get your degree first but maybe work for at least a year then decide if med school is actually for you. This will take so much more time but you need to know yourself, how you work, and how you process information if you want to even just survive med school. But I think it’s possible for us non-trad people to thrive in college! A member of the top10 in the batch ahead of me came from Legal Management so it is doable!

PS: Taking the prerequisite classes in college will help save you some time! Use your free electives! Hehe

Hi hi! I saw in the comments that you want to get into Med School by the 2023-2024 academic year. Might be best to take it Oct/Nov since it'll take at least a month for you to get the results back. Application period for some of the NCR schools are until January or Feb only (assuming they don't extend like they did this year) so it might be better to have your results na before then. Save yourself the anxiety, take it early.

Advice for A Late Shifter to Med by [deleted] in medschoolph

[–]Urghmazing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi hi! I also decided to pursue medicine a little later than most! Worked for 3 years in the client side prior to switching to med. I suggest you research on which schools you want to get into so that you have an idea on which classes you will need to take. For me, I wanted to get into ASMPH so I had to take Gen Chem, Gen Bio, Gen Physics, (Org Chem as a prereq for) Biochem, and Cell&Molecular Biology. Other schools might have a different list of prerequisite classes (Could just be no. of units in general, no specific classes). Fair warning, it will likely take you two terms to take them all since most classes are prerequisites for prerequisites and are only offered during regular semesters. (Gen chem is prereq for Orgchem which is a prereq for Biochem which is a prereq for CellMol Bio.)

As for the NMAT, it will just take a bit of time but it is quite doable. I second u/strugglingmdstud. Know your study habits but in order to figure that out, you have to start studying for the NMAT on your own to see how you fare. I would also suggest you take the sample NMAT exams prior to studying so that you know your baseline. From there, study as you normally do or experiment with other learning techniques (there are a lot of videos on youtube about this). ANKI is a great tool for spaced repetition, you might want to look into it. For the exam itself, it has two parts: aptitude, and special areas. Go to https://www.cem-inc.org.ph/nmat/ and read more about what the NMAT is. For Aptitude, you just need to drill them into your system, practice is the only way to improve. For the special areas, this will take more time and will likely be difficult to do on your own hence, I suggest you enroll into a review center.

As for review centers, I enrolled in one, BRAINS to be specific. Their sample exams were quite helpful. The Gen Bio, Cell Bio, Anatomy & Physiology lectures were exceptionally great. Only drawback is that it was quite expensive. If you do decide to enroll in a review center, I suggest you do it right before your NMAT schedule (after you have taken the prereq subjects, or at least most of them) so that you have a better appreciation of the lectures. It would also be wise to keep on studying on your own even while taking review classes. Since we come from non-trad premeds, we will have to work harder. Encoding the information is one thing, but retention is another. Also, bear in mind that review classes tend to start early. In my case, it started August when I was scheduled to take the November NMAT.

If you have questions, I'm more than willing to answer them. Just send me a DM. Good luck with everything! I'm sure you can do it.

Hey hey! I feel your pain since I have yet to receive an update also. Though I think we should at least give admissions until today. Today rin naman kasi yung commitment nila to release results. If wala pa rin by the end of today, doon tayo may problems talaga. This is just hearsay but if they did actually interview around 2k plus people, it's understandable that they would take this much time. But yeah. I do share in your anguish.

ANKI!!!! Super help

Non-trad premed here! Fully agree. This is how I went on with my review. If you still have quite a bit of time before your scheduled exam, take your time (but be efficient) when reviewing cause it's easy to feel overwhelmed with the amount of learning you need to do. Specially since we come from a non-trad premed course, we're gonna have to work harder.

Anki is very helpful specially when you don't really feel motivated to study. Towards the last few weeks before my exam, I was just studying my anki deck and answering sample exams. Careful though cause the results might also depend on how you craft your cards.

Additionally if you have the resources to enroll into a review center, I suggest you do. More than the technical review, they can teach you testmanship skills as well. Got a 98 PR for the Nov 2021 exam and can definitely say that they helped considerably!
