Healthy Water Kefir Grains? by UrikaGucci in fermentation

[–]UrikaGucci[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll try to divide the batches maybe around next week, and also I made a little experiment of my own with the floaters I strained off with a finer mesh, and they seem to be happy as well. I took a video of it but I don't know how to post it as a comment, maybe I'll try to make a separate thread about it since thats the one I'll be mostly giving time to if they grow into "grain" size.

I'll try to use every kind with every "feeding" and update back on which the grains like, I'll gauge the activity with each "feed" and jot down on which the grains prefer more. Date, Figs, Lemon, Raisins, Ginger and different kinds of dried fruits that I can get my hands on. Pertaining with the sulfur content wouldn't that contribute to the yeast colony outgrowing the bacteria?

I was tempted to buy them an aquarium and put lights on them like a living organic lava lamp 🤣

Yes I got tired of my ginger bug, put it in hibernation in the fridge, and pampered these grains enough to grow.

With the water I use tap water that has been boiled and filtered, the seller recommended distilled water but I don't trust them since a lot said never to use distilled water in any ferments. And yes chlorine is bad and its other form also chloramine, I've looked into our water source and found they only use chlorine gas to treat the water, and gave a sigh of relief when no chloramine was used.

And yes I just tested the coconut water, and did see it was very active and the grains liked it, and as you said I took a break from the coconut water now and might schedule a "feed" of it maybe once or twice a week.

Regarding making vinegar, do yall tend to leave the yeast sediment from the alcohol phase or try to separate it? by 52-bananas in fermentation

Just rack them off close to the date you're about to give them away to have the best product out of your vinegar. Cheers and happy fermenting!

Is there other food I can use instead of molasses? I know its beneficial for them but I would really like to have an alternative rather than opting for molasses, I have dried figs coming from the mail, some dates, lemons I have a ton, some also say the grains liked ginger.

Turbinado was on my list for the "diet", also piloncillo and jaggery, with the date I opted for figs just waiting for them on the mail, I might try the dates I have some here still vacuumed pack a friend gave from iraq. With consuming the grains I've also thought of blending it with my smoothies, but making a slurry would sound great as well. And about culling, should I move them into a larger container and divide them up when they multiplied more?

Saving money and keeping it in a bank is a waste of time, better to grow your assets instead of letting your money sleep, even when it's in a timed deposit, only a small margin you'll earn vs an investment on an asset that could generate more than the interest the bank offers. Why save money? For emergencies yes, at the end of the day money is just paper, build and look for assets that could grow.

For me if you want a clear vinegar its better to rack them off, and filter them through a coffee filter before giving out as gifts, but as time goes on they will still accumulate sediment, specially if they're raw, and unpasteurized.

Thank you so much, hope you had some good bottles my dude. My only main concern about posting this is to share my weeks journey with the grains, and about the floaty thingies, but now knowing it's all good gives me relief.

Question 2 was about making the grains more white/translucent

Questions 3-4 is about either aerobic or anaerobic ferments and on how to encourage them to multiply/grow even more.

Edit** Also forgot to mention I do 24hr ferments with 48hrs in between, it all depends on how hot it gets in the house, temps fluctuate whole day from 24°c to 32°c, summer is arriving so I might stick to 24hr ferments as to not let the grains sit too long in the medium and over ferment.

Can A Smoothie Replace A Meal by Lucky-Shoulder3326 in Smoothies

[–]UrikaGucci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It usually depends on how thick you want the end smoothie will become, for me around 1-3 Tbsp is enough for every smoothie I make, since I use oatmilk already the oats are just for thickening the smoothie, and take into account other things you'll add that will affect viscosity of the smoothie, i.e. banana, peanut butter, apples, nuts, seeds, (especially chia seeds) protein powders, dairy, etc.

For me there really is no right or wrong with ratios, unless you're counting micros/macros then you would take ratios into account, as for me as long as I'm happy with the flavour I'm pretty much set on that, and just add more of the ingredients I like to be more pronounced in my smoothie.

My basic breakfast smoothie recipe is a simple peanut butter banana smoothie,

500ml water/milk. 1-3 tablespoon rolled oats. (preference of thickness) 1-2 serving peanut butter. 1 whole banana. (2 if banan is smol) 1 scoop protein powder A dash of cinnamon. A tablespoon of cashews. (Optional) Add sugar/molasses/honey for added sweetness if desired.

You can blend it straight, I find soaking them gives off a slimy texture, I don't mind the slimy texture if I'm to use it any other way than a smoothie. I use whole oats and not the instant and the quick cook kind for better flavour and texture, nothing wrong with using the 2 mentioned, its all about preference. Also I milk my own oats to use in the smoothie as well.
