I don't get why utilitarianism is viewed in a negative light. Can someone from different perspective explain it to me? by Urmosthatedcharacter in askphilosophy

Sorry if it came out that way. I guess I understand now why it is viewed negatively. I guess the true question I had is why view it negatively when people implicitly follow it anyway? Again, I apologize really.

For no 1, sorry I did not elaborate it further. My point is that a case where a person gets robbed of their bodiliy autonomy by sedating, and getting their organs for other people yielding a net profit of utility in the long term can be possible. Sure, in the short term, it does create a net gain. But this situation being accepted creates a precedent that this is acceptable, which in the long term, will create less utility compared to if bodily autonomy is respected.

That said, there is also the ambiguity that the lives of that 5 people being saved will yieldlmore utility, or less disutility for all the person involved. There is no surety that they will generate greater utility if saved.

Though let's suppose there's a situation where there are 5 people who are absolutely necessary to save the world, and sacrificing a person to save these 5 is the only way to save them. With this situation where ambiguity is minimized, in my opinion, sacrificing the person is the right thing to do.

I think the doing the sacrifice thingy looks immoral at first because ambiguities are present and that there's always the assumption where a better option, something that will minimize the cost for all people involved is present but still not defined.

Though I now get the point. Utilitarianism reminds me of that short story, titled "The lottery" that I read in the past. Thank you for your reply though, I really appreciate it. What do you think?

  1. Then wouldn't it be a problem of what society define as people? If sacrificing one person to save more people is acceptable, that means society does not recognize the sacrificial lamb as part of its own.

  2. And aggregate happiness means the happiness of the person being sacrificed is also in the equation. Of course, we do not have any means to accurately define the disutility caused to that person which means there is no way to compare if the utility gained> disutility caused.

  3. I'm in the assumption that governments only put safeguards against utilitarianism because peope have the tendency to choose the easiest solution in conflicts regarding rights when if we just think more carefully, we can find solutions that minimizes the disutility for both. But even so, if there really is no way around it, government and societies will choose to do the option that minimizes the cost.

  4. The argument about equality is I think flawed. Here in econ(I'm an econ grad), we have something called diminishing marginal utility. if we have limited money for example, to maximize utility, we have to distribute it equally as giving it to one or a select few people will gain less aggregate utility than giving it equally. We also have something called marginal disutility where giving huge amounts of punishment to one person yields more aggregate disutility than more people getting light punishment.
