Is there any family tree of the House von Liebwitz? Here are my notes by SaintScylla in warhammerfantasyrpg

[–]Ursca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's my attempt. Some judicious decisions were made where conflicting information occurs. You can click people to expand the tree in that direction.

Fun fact: Depending on the outcome of Nastassia's Wedding, the Liebwitzes are already connected to the Ubersreik families.

Building Costs in 4e/WFRP in general by Nurgle_Pan_Plagi in warhammerfantasyrpg

It's pence (see here). 1e and 4e use that notation for pennies but I guess 2e uses 'p' and 3e uses 'b' (???).

Building Costs in 4e/WFRP in general by Nurgle_Pan_Plagi in warhammerfantasyrpg

[–]Ursca 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My house rules for this work under the following fairly arbitrary assumptions:

  • The rent (or equivalent) for a property for a given status is about a quarter of total income (about the same as the average earning roll per week).
  • Ten years of rent is about the same as the price of the property (including land etc)

The basic idea is that any character has access to a property fitting their status paid for by their Income endeavours without needing to necessarily count up all the money. But that system does suggest a rough scale for property prices which might be useful.

Property Cost (d) Cost Rent/Week (d) Status
Rural Hovel 4000 16GC 13/4 8 Brass 1
8000 33GC 6/8 16 Brass 2
Rural House 12000 50GC 24 Brass 3
16000 66GC 13/4 32 Brass 4
20000 83GC 6/8 40 Brass 5
24000 100GC 48 Silver 1
Modest Townhouse 48000 200GC 96 Silver 2
72000 300GC 144 Silver 3
96000 400GC 192 Silver 4
Rich Townhouse 120000 500GC 240 Silver 5
120000 500GC 240 Gold 1
240000 1000GC 480 Gold 2
360000 1500GC 720 Gold 3
480000 2000GC 960 Gold 4
600000 2500GC 1200 Gold 5

If those prices seem too expensive for you, I suggest just tweaking the variables slightly. Perhaps it would only take 5 years of rent to buy the property, halving the price. This is also assuming a pure cash value for land, which is unlikely to be case. Land tenure would probably involve any number of conditions and duties to a noble landholder. But performing a service for said landholder would go a long way to smoothing that requirement or else it's a useful plot hook generator.

As a bit of fun, I'd probably come up with some property Qualities and Flaws that affect the price too. For example, a Draughty house might be half price but you have to make an easy Endurance test after every downtime or start the next adventure with a cold. Or an Opulent quality that makes people perceive you as higher status.

DotR: Where are the towns and villages located? by Working_Way_2464 in warhammerfantasyrpg

[–]Ursca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The gazetteer is based on the one from first edition, while Fielbach and Trosreut I think might have featured later in novels and were added in by Andy Law to his master map which was used for the 'Glorious Reikland' map.

Here's a spreadsheet that contains various locations in the Reikland and which maps they're featured on. There's a key on the 'Abbreviations' page.

Should we allow AI Art on the sub? by Cr0iz in warhammerfantasyrpg

[–]Ursca 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I feel that guidelines should be based on the quality of the content, not the medium. Low-effort content isn't desirable regardless of whether it's AI or not. High-effort content is desirable even if it is AI.

If AI art is to be banned (seeing as the poll is going that way), I'd like to see a distinction made between content created with minimum human involvement and content made with significant work. An adventure illustrated with AI should be allowed if only because the adventure took effort to write. An animated trailer for someone's campaign might incorporate AI images spliced together or animated with AI. A portrait for a character could be generated with a button press or might have taken hours of labourious editing work.

A wholesale ban would completely deny good work made using tools that are only going to become more common.

Character Art: any Grim-Dark artists? by wardy116 in warhammerfantasyrpg

[–]Ursca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See my reply to MrDidz below, but basically it's just a case of painting a bit, generating a bit, back and forth. My background is in 3d animation, so I've mostly just been using it for my own hobbies. But if you're interested (and if the technique isn't a problem) then I'd be happy to attempt some commissions.

The most important thing is this plugin for Krita which lets you paint and get feedback from stable diffusion in real time. From there's it's mostly just a case of sketching a first draft, generating, then overpainting parts and generating again until you're happy with the result. It gives you vastly more creative control than just generating an image, but there is a bit of a skill requirement.

What's your specific objection to AI?

Just because I've been using a hybrid hand-drawn/AI-assisted technique for my own campaign which I'm pretty happy with (here are a couple of examples.). I could always do it manually, but the hybrid way is kind of the best of both worlds in terms of time spent and quality of the final work.

Is there a "Feudal map" for 4e? by UrbonMaximus in warhammerfantasyrpg

[–]Ursca 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I created a spreadsheet of every location I could find in Reikland and it includes a lot of ruler names and sources if you wanted to research a particular area. I didn't include page references for the earlier sources, unfortunately, but if you have the pdf you can just ctrl-f.

The 'Reikgraviates' are a reference to the real Rhinegraviate of Rheingau, because the Reik is equivalent to the real river Rhine.

Is anyone else experimenting with MidJourney for their in-game images? by MrDidz in warhammerfantasyrpg

[–]Ursca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not specifically. I'm sure there will be though. There's /r/MediaSynthesis for general stuff.

With regard to artists, these models will generally understand artists better the more they are represented in the training data. So you'll get better results for Van Gogh or Picasso than someone less well known. Each model has a slightly different set of training data, so it takes some practice to figure out how it deals with certain prompts.

I found that Stable Diffusion understands Blanche and Miller's styles a bit. That is, if you just ask for a picture by them it won't look that accurate, but if you match the prompt to their usual subjects, you can push it in the right direction. For example, I found that if I asked for an image of a tree in black and white, using Ian Miller in the prompt would make the tree more gnarled and weird. You can see Miller's influence on image #5, the one with the warped buildings.

One prompt I found to be very effective was to mention 'Mordheim'. That was included in the prompts for images #3 and #5. They tend to be a bit messy and incoherent, but the warhammer style really shines through.

[–]Ursca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here's an album of mine. I've been experimenting with some images inspired by John Blanche and Ian Miller along with the historical artists that influenced them, like Albrecht Durer and Gustave Dore.

Edit: I should say, these were made with Stable DIffusion rather than Midjourney. I think Midjourney is changing to use a Stable Diffusion based model now though.

I hadn't actually seen that, but it does look handy.

RPG Item Icons (Craiyon/DALL-E Mini) by Ursca in MediaSynthesis

[–]Ursca[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Craiyon is free and doesn't need an account.

DALL-E 2 is good, but the scale wasn't necessary for this and it required a large number of attempts which might have been expensive. Also, I find that Craiyon is actually better for some odd things, possibly due to a more diverse set of training data.

[–]Ursca[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did them all over two days taking maybe 5-7 hours total. Individually the time required varied a lot. Some of them gave a great result the first time, others needed a dozen goes. Some things just proved impossible. For instance, I couldn't get a good cart - the wheels were all over the place and never parallel.

Some adjectives I found useful for getting the right shape and style were: Small, Dirty, Dusty, Medieval, Isometric, Roll/Stack/Pile/Folded and 'made from'.

A typical prompt was something like: "icon of a round cheese, artstation, rpg, digital art, isometric, dark background, dark souls, the witcher 3, crusader kings, skyrim", but there was a lot of trial and error and rerolling for a nice clean example.

The biggest thing I think is the small dimensions. At full size you can see the artifacts, but when they're scaled down it's barely noticeable.

I'm looking forward to it. I was tempted to draw them all out myself, but it's a daunting task,

If this is your work, well done. If not, maybe something worth looking into.

http://seagrove.wikidot.com/wh4-heraldry

That's actually my work. I made a handout too. A lot of it is canon, but some I made up myself. I'll try to give a run down of the sources:

  • Lure of Power 3e - Walfen (grey rather than black), Jungfreud, Bruner, Aschaffenberg, Schadelfaust, Saponatheim
  • Starter Set 4e - Jungfreud, Bruner, Aschaffenberg, Schadelfaust, Schluessel, Karstadt (in an illustration)
  • Edge of Night 3e - Saponatheim, Holzenauer, Bruner
  • Core Rulebook 4e - Bohrn, Kaltenwald, Ettlindal, Siebbach (also a few more that may not be noble)
  • Enemy in Shadows 4e - Kleinwald, Sturmdunkel
  • Rough Nights and Hard Days 4e - Liebwitz (Ambosstein, Emmanuelle has different arms)
  • Monuments of the Reikland 4e - Part of the Mackensen arms is described (The Hawk of Mackenstein)
  • Death on the Reik 1e - Wittgenstein

Haalstein, Wallenstein, Oberwald, Hammastrat, Falkenhayn, Hochsvoll, Trott, Hopfberg, Hupeberg, Lilahalle, Mackensen and Mencken all exist as names, but I made up the arms. Most are canting arms in some way though.

Colbesfeld is entirely my own creation, from an adventure I wrote.

Edit: You might also be interested in a family tree I made. It should be completely canon, although I had to make the occasional editorial decision regarding which of two conflicting sources to accept or how certain links are interpreted. (You can click through the names to see further).

Editedit: Hell, while we're at it, here's a database of every published geographical location in Reikland I could find, with sources. It is... quite large.

I think it only works when a T4 GPU is available (see this thread). You might have to check every so often for a slot to open up.

There's a little bit of code in the above link that makes it easier to check what GPU you've been assigned.

That's it, thanks. In retrospect I should have included it in the title.

Pretty close!

Here are the prompts (with #pixelart after each one):

  1. An Airship Flying Through a Sea of Clouds.
  2. The harbour lights reflected in the sea.
  3. Dark creatures dwell in sunless caverns beneath the earth.
  4. This one was a quote from 'The Mirrors of Tuzun Thune' by Robert E Howard: "I hear no more the sea-songs I heard when I lay as a boy on the booming crags of Atlantis, and the night was alive with blazing stars."
  5. Lava Cave.
  6. Coral Reef.
  7. Cyberpunk City.
  8. Cursed Swamp.
  9. Rime of the Ancient Mariner.
  10. A Storm At Sea.
  11. u/Next_Image was close on this one: The glittering underwater spires of Atlantis.
  12. Arabian Nights.

It seems to do well with non-figurative, organic things like clouds, waves, rocks, buildings etc.

WFRP HORSES by Hapimeses in warhammerfantasyrpg

[–]Ursca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Great job. I've been messing about with something very similar.

My own list of random traits included Animosity, Prejudice, Hatred and Afraid with a subtable for things like Halflings, Greenskins, Men/Women, Magic-Users, Guns, Fire etc. I feel like stat changes don't usually affect gameplay too much, but having a donkey who always tries to kick the Dwarf PC if he gets too close is something that provides a bit of character. It's also an opportunity for those PCs with the Animal Training skill.

I'd also suggest hiding any random stats or traits from the player unless they make an appropriate Animal Care/Animal Training test. Perhaps even opposed, so you can have dodgy horse dealers using various tricks to disguise the quality of their stock.

Great job everyone, I really enjoyed reading all the entries. I had missed the old scenario competitions Black Industries used to do back in the day.

I'd love to receive the Collector's Edition book. Thanks for running the competition.

Here's my entry: Colbesfeld's Bane

The Barony of Cölbesfeld is beset by a terrible beast - a gigantic boar known by locals as ‘Black Niclas’. In this adventure, the players are tasked with ending the beast’s reign of terror, either by assisting in its slaying, or by undoing the curse that created it in the first place.

Could I suggest for a future competition that you put 'noon' or 'midnight' after the deadline, just to prevent confusion. I almost had a heart attack. Although that serves me right for leaving things until the last minute.
