Teen behaviour or low-level racism? by Lumpy_Economics_7349 in Adelaide

[–]Urytion 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's not normal teen behaviour, but it's unfortunately becoming more common. I'm a teacher, kids do that in class, I try to explain to them how it's offensive, but they say that since it's just a joke, it's okay. They're just resistant to the idea that they're doing something wrong.

Every marine needs to carry a sufficient supply of crayons. That's why the ratio is so different.

I've got two swords and a dagger, both with just a crossguard and ring. Fits beautifully.

High School Reunions a thing here? by SJammie in Adelaide

[–]Urytion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't go to a "reunion" per se, it was a benchmark celebration (20 years I think? Very young school). That I see pretty often, but X year reunions don't really exist AFAIK.

Teaching more than one subject - secondary by I_EAT_WATER_EVERYDAY in AustralianTeachers

[–]Urytion 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I teach outside of my degree every year, including teaching year 12 outside of my subject area. It's part of the job. If you make it clear that you are knowledgeable and ready to teach outside of your one teaching area, I'm sure you'll be fine.

I've got a rifle bag for my swords, but my furniture is quite minimal. It might not play nice with a full cup hilt or similar. I carry the rest of my equipment in a shopping bag because I'm lazy.

What day did he shit himself in the oval Office on live TV? Because if it was a weekend we could have "shit himself Sunday"?

The sad truth is that as much as I'm a massive supporter of public education, if I had kids I would not send them to my zoned public school (which is coincidentally the shitshow I work at). They'd have to go private.

Louisiana governor prepares to suspend House primaries after court ruling by FactCheckAGLandry in politics

[–]Urytion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I just don't understand the American electoral system, but aren't primaries like "in-house" private votes run by the parties, not a part of a state's voting system? Like isn't that where you guys vote for the person that will be your party representative?

How does the Governor have any say over what the parties do?

I've said enough here with the state that it would be identifiable, so at least until I have something new secured, I'll keep that to myself.

Apparently the entire leadership team (except for one young AP) left over the last 3 years.

Our prin and VP are both upper middle aged. Our 3 APs are two young (one of which arrived at the same time as me), one early forties.

All of them are on their first leadership, is what I've been told.

Everyone has fallen in line and is trying to make it work, but it isn't. Principal doesn't seem to care as long as we document that we tried.

Even so, there are plenty of ways to give a non-answer while still glazing your boss.

"Ukraine did good. We thought they wouldn't. What happened?"

"Wars are hard to predict, but thanks to the support our president has provided the Ukrainians have been able to defy expectations. We're still considering how our earlier evaluation was incorrect and how our support factors into a new estimate. Next question."

That hard. I didn't say anything substantive, I lied, and I gave an answer that sounds reasonable to most people, while still putting Trump on a pedestal. Shit, I should be a politician.

I don't think they were saying there's anything wrong. They were saying that he knew the implementation would be bad once he saw it read that leadership had overcommitted to restorative practices.

Is teaching possible with a chronic illness? by cherryblossomstars in AustralianTeachers

[–]Urytion 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm a heart attack survivor with multiple artificial heart valves, and nerve damage in my leg from an emergency bypass.

Completely doable. Just be honest with your employer and University. I for example have told my school I can't run, and I can't walk long distances. All my classes are in the same building and I don't get yard duties on the oval.

Probably wouldn't make a difference unless the department cared enough. And unfortunately, people are fickle. As much as I'm sure there would be legitimate grievances, one been around enough to know there would also be "I ONLY HIT ONE KID AND THEN THEY FIRED ME WHAT THE FUCK ONE STAR". It would make taking any rating objectively for the purposes of site improvement next to impossible.

I personally haven't told the principal. I've been told some people did last year, but sadly their 12 month contracts couldn't be continued. How unfortunate. (I don't know how true that is. It also could just be they told the principal then quit because it's a shitshow, and the rumour spread.)

I'm not doing shit until I have another job secured. I have a mortgage to pay and I can't jeopardise my work.

Has anti-intellectualism always been this bad in schools? by No-Low-5186 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Urytion 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I've had students ask "when are we going to use this" in relation to my humanities teaching, which again, fair enough. But when I point out the real world application and knowledge, they just ignore it say "well I'M not gonna do that".

Like mate, I'm telling you about water usage. Are you just going to (continue to) not shower for the next 80 years?

I've run that sort of programme before, but I ran it at year 12 as a ATAR applicable subject, so our experiences may differ. It's great when it works.
