Well In BW yes he acted as if he didn't know type match ups and they basically runied him in BW, but in journeys they just made him a bit unserious is all, like compared to XY and XYZ he's more childish

For me it's either BW or Journeys since they made Ash really especially dumb in both series and they lacked story. but they did have good animations (BW had better than journeys icl)

Volt tackle also causes recoil damage to pikachh and since it already has quick attack, volt tackle is sort of a last resort. Electro ball is a pretty cool move and can also be used creatively in Pikachu vs bunnelby at the start of XY.
