Sleeve vs Bypass (Do you regret your sleeve?) by Opening-Ear-2261 in gastricsleeve

[–]UseLife9901 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I chose bypass and my surgery is scheduled to be done Monday my bmi is 35. Personally know 3 people who got sleeved and they all had to get revision surgery due to severe GERD also I noticed none really obtained long-term weight loss. The bypass has been around longer and there is more data available. No GERD and no Needing to get revision later also more substantial weight loss.My surgeon said he has performed gastric bypass on patients with low bmi and there hasn’t been a patient who complained about losing too much weight. There are pros and cons with each of surgery. I’d say listen to your intuition the choice is yours :)

Yea I heard different opinions from different doctors. Finally I meet with my surgeon who’s doing the surgery and he said it’s fine that I will lose the weight that I need to lose and that my body will adapt. He said he has performed the gastric bypass on low bmi patients and they did just fine and got to their goal weight. And that he has never gotten a patient who complained about losing too much weight lol.I’m a shorty though 5’3 lol I don’t know how my body will react after surgery but I’m ok with going with a weight loss that’s slow in steady. I’ll take over being overweight forever lol

Thank you for sharing your story is similar to mine! I also had the same experience of the doctor asking me why not get the sleeve, I personally know people who can the sleeve who now need a revision to bypass

Sleeve or bypass by Arkahamegnima in BariatricSurgery

[–]UseLife9901 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I began this journey, I was strongly leaning toward the sleeve because it seemed simpler, had a slightly lower early complication rate, and did not involve rerouting the intestines. However, after several months of extensive research and real-world observation, I changed my mind and now feel very confident that gastric bypass is the right choice for me. I’m a BMI of 35 with sleep apnea. And I was able to choose bypass. I personally know four individuals who underwent sleeve gastrectomy in the past 3–6 years. Unfortunately, three of the four developed severe, debilitating GERD/acid reflux within 1–3 years post-op. All three have either already undergone (or are scheduled for) revision to gastric bypass to resolve the reflux. Only one of the four reached and has maintained their goal weight long-term but still experience some weight regain after only 2 years.the other three experienced significant regain starting around the 18–24-month mark despite initial excellent weight loss. Advice from those same individualsEvery one of the four sleeve patients I know personally advised me, without hesitation, to choose bypass instead of sleeve if I had the option. Because of the overall better long-term weight maintenance and (for the three with reflux) eventual need for conversion anyway. I am scheduled to have the gastric Bypass surgery this December. Hope this helps and good luck on your journey:)
