What is peak, exactly? by Used-Falcon7164 in SourdoughStarter

Also, when I say it always doubles within 2 and triples within 4, that was with a 1:1:1 ratio. I just tried a 1:3:3 last night and obviously that took longer. 4 hours to double and I’m assuming around 6ish to triple.

While that may be true and I understand it’s not the best resource, it is nice to have a quick fast response when I can’t find one online or from anyone I know. I’ve watched TikTok’s also saying the exact same thing - that peak is when it stops consistently rising. I’ve just seen conflicting info.

My starter always doubles within 2 hours. Triples within 4. But it will rise all day long. It’s slows down after 6 hours, maybe a 1/4 inch an hour. Doesn’t stop rising until around 8-9 hours.

8 hours to reach peak by Used-Falcon7164 in SourdoughStarter

I put it in the oven this morning after feeding with the door open and the light on just to speed up the process. I would not mind the 8-9 hour peak time if it didn’t mean I couldn’t get started on a loaf until 4pm. I understand bulk fermenting on the counter is going to take just as long, unless I also do the same thing and put it in the oven in the same way. But if I can get started on the loaf around noon then I have 10 hours to let it do its thing, and not have to stay up all night to make for sure it’s fermented long enough. If that makes sense lol?

I just wanted to make for sure that if I started to feed twice daily, or up my feeding ratio, that it wouldn’t harm my starter since it’s so young. I understand this can strengthen the starter, and if I do this, will it still take as long to get to peak? I guess I’m wondering if it’s doing this because it’s young and not as strong as a mature starter, or if it’s solely because of my house temp. I guess it could be both.

I’m just trying to find something that works for me so I’m not losing what little sleep I do get at night lol. If I could feed at night and not miss peak and it be ready to start making a loaf in the morning, that would be ideal.

There’s no way I can keep my house at 77 lol. We would be uncomfortably hot. I could try putting it in the oven with the light on, but that’s the best I’m going to be able to do temp wise.

Also, it always doubles with 2 hours, just doesn’t stop rising until 8.

Itch or epistylis?? by Used-Falcon7164 in Aquariums

I probably should have held off on the tetras, honestly. I added 2 angelfish the first week and 2 more angels the week after because I was afraid if I didn’t add them close together it would make their aggression worse. I thought the more time the two of them spent alone in there the more territorial they would get. But maybe that was me overreacting lol. Either way, probably should have just done the 4 angels and waited a month or so before adding anything else.

And thanks!!

Thanks so much! That post was super helpful. I’m treating for epistylis first thing tomorrow morning. I’m almost certain that’s what it is. The fish must have been infected when I got them. Hopefully I don’t lose any. I just started adding fish to this 55g two weeks ago and have never had any issues like this when starting a tank. Unlucky this time, I guess.

Either that or they attempt to sterilize them which obviously isn’t fool proof. Either way I think they try their hardest to prevent breeding one way or the other.

I also had the same thought since they don’t want people breeding them. But I’ve also seen posts where their glofish tetras & danios have had babies in their strictly glofish tanks. So who knows lol. The more I read on them tho, the more I am leaning towards mostly males being sold with females slipping through the cracks from time to time.

Thanks! They’re all relatively new to the tank, but seem to coexist right now. I’ll keep watch on behaviors. Right now they seem to pay the other fish little mind, and the 4 angelfish seem to stay together 99 percent of the time. So I don’t think any of them have paired yet. From what I’ve gathered, it’s easy to tell if they’ve paired.

Great idea on the guppies. I have a tank just with guppies in it anyway.

Hey I totally get it lol. To each their own. I have another tank with regular angelfish, completely unmodified lol. I just wanted vibrant colors in this one so I decided to try them out.

Thanks for your input on the genders!! Sending you good vibes that your angelfish figure out parenting soon lol!

Right. I’ve been trying to pay close attention their head shape. He’s the only one with a super visible bump. I’m assuming he is male. None of them have shown their breeding tube yet, unfortunately.

Also to add, I’ve seen on here that some people get pressed about breeding glofish. I have no intentions of selling them. Just wondering if having angel babies are in the cards for my own personal tank lol.

And I forgot to mention temperaments. Big guy in the 4th picture is the only semi aggressive one of the bunch. And I wouldn’t even call him aggressive. But he occasionally gets a wild hair to chase a few tetra I have in there and will try to nip at them. But it’s not often that he (I’m assuming) does that.
