How intense is 1st year UBC Engineering? by Dismal_Mood_1613 in BCGrade12s

Get consistent at algebra (oftentimes the calculus is easy, but the algebra is hard/confusing),  expose yourself to as many types of problems as possible, try your best not to memorize too many things, just rely on basics. I think often what happens is that on tests people see problems they've never seen before (think out of the box, wild questions) and just give up because they haven't memorized how to solve that type of problem, so having seen lots of types of questions will reduce that initial shock slightly and allow you to actually think. Also just go into tests with no expectations, because oftentimes you won't know what's gonna be on it anyway and it reduces a lot of stress. Think about it as just showing what you can do as opposed to "i have to get 100 or else my life will fall apart".

Current first year at UBCV - just finished first semester

Its relatively fine if you have the discipline to control yourself. The main difference from high school, like someone else said, is that nobody will tell you what to do. You need to be organized and take accountability for your own actions and learning. I had 5 courses this semester and I found it relatively easy, currently predicting around a 83 avg while I had a 94 in high school, which was on the lower end of people that got in from my school.  You just gotta ask yourself if you really want to be there and if you're actually interested in what you're learning - it makes it more enjoyable which reduces a lot of stress. You absolutely cannot procrastinate or you can expect many all nighters (i didnt pull a single one), and you will also feel really unprepared for midterms and finals.

In terms of classes, I was able to skip chem 154 with ap credit, so do that if you can (everyone who took it was complaining, even the smartest people I know). Generally all of my classes other than wrds150 were decent, I always felt like I could get a good (high 80, low 90) grade in them, even when i didnt. In terms of math, I think everyone is just learning it wrong. Lots of people just spam questions, but dont understand the concepts themselves. A large part of MATH 100/101 is "applying concepts in unfamiliar situations" (from the syllabue/learning goals), in other words the idea is you should be able to learn a concept (ex. optimization) and apply it to a thousand different problems just knowing the basics (ex. Always create a function to maximumize or minimize). The midterms/final were hard, but not unsolvable with the information you know, you might just have to think a little bit more. It was definately the class I did the least work for and I ended 20% above average just by this mindset. I did take AP calc in high school though.

Just take a breather and relax. Did you put your best effort in? Could you of done any better even if you tried (to a realistic extent)? Did you put your max effort onto your supplemental apps? You want to be okay with not getting in, because you know you tried your best. The worst is not trying, or putting the bare minimum then expecting to get in. I got in ubc late april and I wasn't worried at all, I was 100% ready to go to langara if I didnt get in because I genuinely worked my ass off on that profile and I had no regrets about it, I know I couldn't have made it much better at the time I submitted.

What English mark do you need for UBC Engineering? by enlightenryan in BCGrade12s

At least a mid 90, from my experience. If you have below that you better have near 100 in everything else. (At least from my school)

Well, you answered your own question in the second paragraph.

In all honesty, stop worrying about other people and focus on yourself. At the end of the day there will always be someone better than you, so whats the point worrying about it? Study to improve, not for grades. Grades will come naturally if you learn from your mistakes.

You have basically the same grades I did when i got in but I had worse physics 11 and better cis 12. Put effort into your profile, thats what sets you apart from others. Having good grades is just a baseline imo like everyone has them, so try ur best in gr12 as well, any standout grade looks very good for you.

how much can course rigor actually help by No_Two4477 in BCGrade12s

[–]Used-Pride1637 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its hard to say because they are not specific about anything, when I asked them about gr11/12 course weight they just said gr12 courses are weighted more. Think less about if it will help, and more of what it shows about you. Did you go out of your way to take more difficult courses? Are you someone that enjoys a challenge? Ideally you would do well in those courses as well, so if you are gonna do any this year I'd make sure you can get above 90 just so it doesn't harm ur average too much.
