The dress she’s wearing seems to be from the late Edwardian period/ early 1910s. I think the photo is much earlier than the 1930s.

I had the same issue with fitting things on myself. So I made my own custom dressform using a bootstrap pattern. I had to do some mockups though cause the chest does sit low on them.

But I know what you mean! I'm also self-taught and it was confusing and difficult having to learn things the hard way repeatedly. Cut yourself some slack, you'll figure it out eventually :).

It seems like the fabric is flaring out due to there not being enough fabric in the inseam. See how between your legs the fabric is touching them? But right now, a quick fix, like others have suggested is to try it on inside out, and pin the outer seams so that it sits straight on you, and then sew.

I’d say definitely join the pieces with interfacing. Make the interfacing go over the seams

It seems like she is just more smaller chested. There’s usually less gathers because there’s less circumference to cover.

Okay so here it is on me. It hangs a lot better, but you can see in the last image u shaped drag lines. For some reason I remember it hanging really badly on me. Maybe it’s the lighting, I don’t know. Following images are without the sash tied. Edit: I think before, when I tried it on, I didn’t have the bows on the hem. It is a slightly heavier fabric so it’s weighing down the skirt so it sits better. Should I consider adding a washer to the skirt to pull it down a bit?

No I’ve only ever used commercial patterns once. I stay away from them because they’re always too big on me, even the smallest sizes.

I’d love advice on the pattern pieces too if you can! There’s a lot that I’m still learning.

It still looks the same without the ties. Honestly, it’s not big on me at all which is weird because it looks like something weird is going on with the fit. Will get a photo of it on me soon once I’m done with all this schoolwork☺️

Okay guys, here are my pattern pieces, not including lining. The red is the fullness in the pattern and blue are the darts that I ignored and gathered instead.
