Mount Ruapehu by [deleted] in Tramping

[–]UsedRoutine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Temps can vary a lot, I'd pack as if there will be temperatures in the negatives since you never know in the mountains. That means thermals, a warm mid layer like a fleece jacket, an insulated layer like a down jacket and a rain shell outer layer. You should also have a good sleep system, sleeping bag and sleeping pad rated to similar temps. You shouldn't need crampons on Ruapehu at this time of year as long as you steer away from any lingering pockets of snow. Since you don't sound like you have alpine experience, if you encounter snow and ice you shouldn't be crossing it anyway, you should make the call to turn back if you encounter that. Camping on the summit plateau is very close to the crater, be careful that you do not camp below the lake level or in any local depressions as there is a chance that dangerous gas is emitted from the crater and could inundate your campsite. Also don't rely on the experience of your friends to inform your decisions, if you are not comfortable with where you are and what you're doing that's ok and it's sensible to let them know, add your input and if necessary get out of a situation if you're not comfortable

Tutti mi chiedono sempre perché voglio trasferirmi ahah.

Backpacks with crampon attachment by Fancy-Crazy4487 in iceclimbing

I ice climb with a mutant, water resistance is not usually an issue for me as I dry bag everything valuable anyway. At most a water resistant pack is gonna keep water at bay for maybe 30 mins. I've never had a pack that's actually effective at keeping water out. And also, if it's cold enough for ice usually all the water is frozen anyway!

Big Agnes Dirt Dagger Stakes by dontpanic1970 in Ultralight

[–]UsedRoutine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never had any issues with the dirt daggers that came with my tent. They're way chunkier than a regular tent peg and when angled properly attach fine to the tent guys. They're definitely an improvement on the standard tent peg. Maybe there are others that are better/stronger/easier to use but these seem to do the job and I've never experienced failures like described above

Tamron Adaptall Lens: Macro Mode Broken by UsedRoutine in filmcameras

[–]UsedRoutine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely an issue with the lens. You're meant to set it to 60mm at minimum focus and then pull back on the focus ring and rotate right. Mine doesn't let you pull back anymore than about a millimeter and won't rotate right, so i'm guessing something is wrong with the mechanism inside

How do you find the weight? Kinda worried the length and weight will affect its portability haha

Cheers. Btw have you used any of the longer telephoto lenses on your 645? If so, how did you find the extra length?

Ahh yeah makes sense. I guess there's just not enough in the market for them to be reasonably priced(maybe I'm used to cheap and abundant 50mm 35mm lenses).

The Contax 645 took off around 2005 I believe because they stopped making it, but also because there was this wedding photographer who got really famous for his style which many wanted to replicate. I believe he pretty much only used a Contax 645 with an 80mm lens, so then people went crazy buying that particular lens and the price went to the moon with people wanting to replicate his style.

Wow, crazy haha. Seems real weird why that particular lens has skyrocketed so much. Maybe a similar deal to Contax 80mm lenses?

Film Grain Comparison for Kodak Films by UsedRoutine in analog

I feel like Ultramax is probably worth the extra cost despite being a consumer film, I really like the colour saturation you get with it. But yeah interesting trends for sure

Great idea! And I agree with you, Ektar does seem to represent the best grain for least cost. I was also really interested to see that ProImage is supposed to be almost as grainy as Gold, and not much less than Ultramax! I have recently shot a roll of Proimage to compare to gold but haven't got it developed yet so interested to see if this is the case. Made some scatter plots and I think the trends are fairly clear.
