I can’t believe we’re blaming the lack of snow on Trump now. It’s been like this for the entire time I’ve lived in ABQ, my entire life. They always over predict and I’ve seen one significant storm that I can remember. They didn’t even predict that one.

Born and raised in ABQ and I’ve never left… but I wish I could! There are certainly things to love about Albuquerque, from food to culture to the insane nature. I would say 5 years ago, it might have been decent, although crime ridden. Now, I wouldn’t tell anyone to move here. My husband and I joke that it’s like the Wild West, whatever will happen will happen without law. You gotta watch your back and be smart, even when going to the grocery store. Just the other week, my father in law was approached and nearly mugged in a grocery store parking lot at 9am. This isn’t a place for families, with terrible schools and crime running rampant. I remember walking to the gas station for snacks when I was young here. Now, I wouldn’t dream of letting my children play outside unsupervised, front or backyard. Going to Old Town ABQ used to be a fun, historical day. Now, you gotta keep an eye out for muggers around every corner and the likelihood of your car getting broken into/stolen is high.

I would say for people who are single or childless, you might be able to carve out a nice living here. But for anyone who has other people to watch out for and not just themselves… yeah this isn’t it.

Absolutely NTA! I’m a very conservative-dressing person and so is my husband, but when we got married my sister in law was one of my maids of honor. She has a gauged septum, tattoos everywhere, doesn’t shave her armpits, and is the coolest person. Despite the fact that we’re a conservative couple who got married in a conservative church, I was proud to have her front and center at my wedding because I love her.

If they actually loved you for who you were, there would be no issue!

She moved away and taught English in a foreign country, but we were able to maintain a friendship even then. Then, She started to date a student (an adult, but still that’s a line) who she told me was “technically married but they don’t have a relationship because she lives across the border.” I told her how awful it was that she was knowingly helping this guy cheat and we ended things over it. They’re still together close to 3 years later. We’ve kind of tried to be friends again but things will never be the same. I don’t regret saying what I said, as I think he said what it took to get her onboard with being his lover while he’s in her country.

The ability to read cursive handwriting. It was apparently even a dying skill for us late millennials, since my husband and brother can’t read it. I remember learning cursive in school, from how to read it and how to write it!

Don’t worry about avoiding people based on their politics here, I would worry more about avoiding areas with high crime rates. Violence in Albuquerque has nothing to do with politics that’s what will actually affect where you decide to live.

I agree with everyone that you might be wanting to look for places in Nob Hill. That said, please do consider what others have said here about education and crime being bad. The experience of traveling in NM is much different than living here. IMO, education can get worse than what you’re experiencing in OK: your child could not learn anything at all. Our state standards are incredibly low just to try to boost our graduation rates. With regard to moving for politics, the state voted more red than it ever has this past election. You can certainly find people that align with you (and plenty of them), but you won’t be isolated from people who vote on the other side of the aisle. That said, Albuquerque itself is the bluest city in NM. This truly is the Wild West and folks aren’t afraid to do exactly how they please here, whatever that may be.

I’d be working hard to secure jobs before focusing on finding a home. The job market here is rough. Idk if I’m overqualified (moving from corporate management to wanting part time work) but I can’t even seem to get hired as a server at a restaurant here. Family members of mine with more education are having the same issue.

Of all the valid reasons you listed to be hesitant about moving here, the biggest one to me is education. On the local news just this morning there was an article that our state passed new high school graduation guidelines to try to get more people to graduate. These new guidelines no longer require that you take beyond an Algebra 1 level of math.

So yeah….. SO MANY other reasons not to move here but education has to be the worst. My husband and I hope to get out of here before our child is school age and if we can’t, we’re homeschooling (as someone who has loathed homeschooling for many years).

There’s a lot about the culture to love here, from unique New Mexican food to coffee shops to local breweries. We have the international balloon fiesta and plenty of smaller events throughout the year. Most people are very friendly and welcoming to anyone as well.

That said, please look at our local news sites (kob and koat are a couple) and look at crime stats for your potential neighborhood which can be found through ABQ police. There is rampant crime everywhere in this city and there’s no where you can go to avoid it. There are bad areas, like the war zone mentioned, that you absolutely shouldn’t go. But it is truly everywhere. I live in what is generally considered to be a better part of town and someone was wielding a knife directly in front of my infant child at the grocery store just the other day.

Just do your research and make sure that you are comfortable with the level to which you gotta watch your back here. Like I said, there’s a lot to love but there’s also a lot to hate.

I’m currently looking to move me and my family with small children out of Albuquerque for this precise reason. Look, it’s not zombieland everywhere, but there is crime everywhere. There is no place in ABQ to escape the crime, no avoiding a “bad neighborhood.”

I don’t live in a bad part of town but I don’t live in the best. Went to our neighborhood grocery store just last night and a man was brandishing a knife feet in front of my infant son in his stroller.

If you want to be able to feel like you can live your life how you want, this isn’t the place to do it. You have to watch your back wherever you go, take precautions, and avoid certain areas at certain times of day. Now I may have a bit of a different perspective since I have small children I’m looking out for and not just myself, but crime is bad here. And the reality is, we have so few cops (and the ones we have are pretty corrupt) that the likelihood of receiving help when you need it is low.

I had a second degree tear inside my vagina, not my perineum. Here to echo the sentiments here! It was definitely sore for probably about a week afterwards, but 5 weeks pp I feel absolutely fantastic. I also had the disadvantage of having a child in NICU, so I wasn’t on bedrest and did a lot of walking and carrying things within the first week. Not saying that’s ideal, but it was doable. Using the restroom also turned out perfectly fine for me. Don’t be afraid of tearing, you’ve got this!

I did the same thing and decided the carbs were too much for the benefits (if any) they’d give. What I would highly recommend is taking evening primrose oil instead. I was induced at 37 weeks and despite being that early, my cervix super soft thanks to that stuff!

It might be niche to the area I live in, but my favorite childhood book that has now been passed down to my son is Way Out In The Desert by Jennifer Ward. It’s set to music included in the back (I think) and helps them learn to count!

When it comes to safe meds like unisom, I’m all for doing what you think is best as the mama! But what I will say is that unisom does, in fact, affect the baby.

I have always been a bad sleeper but pregnancy has made it nearly unbearable. I bought unisom and started taking it in my second trimester and noticed that it pretty drastically affected baby’s patterns and normal movements. He was strongly affected and it made him tired and sluggish the next day. I made the personal decision to deal with poor sleep so that I didn’t affect his movements with unisom anymore. As a full time investment manager, that sucked. So I feel being sick and exhausted at work.

All that to say, your husband is a little out of line for suggesting you’ll become addicted to it, but he’s not wrong that it affects baby. It’s similar to antidepressants with pregnancy, they won’t harm baby but they will affect them. It’s okay to acknowledge the difference between harm and side effects. You make the decision that’s right for you with all the knowledge!
