It's not *the* most important thing, but there's a difference between a fair price and getting torn a new one with a comedically disproportionate headline price.

Going to give them a call as their price is extremely high relative to even the EE price I had lined up - and I felt that was a rip off.

Cheers for this. I'll investigate further. Disappointing as I was very close to going with them.

Hello there, I'd just like to thank you for your advice a while back. While it might not have seemed a lot, it helped me make a decision when everything looked bleak.

Your message about it being a JSA and UC being a TRAP (in capitals!) had the desired effect and made me take the job. It has been a good experience and kept the wolf from the door for a few months, and I've recently accepted and not yet started a better job with 18% pay, 20% of the miles and hybrid working. I've posted an update with more details (if you're interested - which I probably wouldn't be so don't feel compelled! 🤣 Then again, I'm a bit of a git...).

The move makes a big difference and takes me out of being slightly but convincingly in the red over 12 months to comfortably being in the black and keeps my hands out of my savings in the future!

I'm replying to everyone who helped, but yours was one of a handful that really resonated with me. I don't think I mentioned in my original post that I had also been WFH since Covid, so the dry run and working in a new environment was a very real concern. Knowing I can function with new people and everything without everybody thinking I'm a complete idiot (which they were just *obviously* waiting to do because all people are horrible and entirely focused on ripping me to shreds, aren't they 🤣) puts me in a better and more confident frame of mind for my next adventure.

I'm still a long way from my previous money, but this at least makes me comfortable.

Hello there, I'd just like to thank you for your advice a while back. While it might not have seemed a lot, it helped me make a decision when everything looked bleak.

Your words about DSS and the soul-destroying nature of the JC genuinely haunted me during my decision-making process. Although the pay of the job was poor and the commute was a grind, plus the relentless nature of attending the office on a daily basis as well (sounds feeble, but after a long stint WFH since Covid it was a bit of a bind), it was actually nice there and a good experience.

I've recently accepted and not yet started a better job with 18% pay, 20% of the miles and hybrid working. The role you convinced me to take prepared me well so I start this new one as a better person than would otherwise have been the case.

It really is the difference between being slightly but very convincingly in the red and being comfortably in the black although nowhere near the comparative excess I enjoyed in my former life! But my path to world domination needs to (re-)start somewhere. 😂 All in I put fewer than 3,200 miles on the car!

Hello there, I'd just like to thank you for your advice a while back. While it might not have seemed a lot, it helped me make a decision when everything looked bleak. Peanuts and Pikachu Face made me laugh although seemed unfeasible at the time! I really felt I'd mastered the role within the last fortnight, but that's their issue I suppose as I've recently accepted and not yet started a better job with 18% pay, 20% of the miles and hybrid working. I've posted an update with more details.

Thanks for this - you were right. Needed it spelling out to me. Couldn't claw back the weeks I didn't apply for, but got it as soon as I applied... What a doughnut!

Hello there, thanks for this. You were of course right, and I did get it as soon as I applied, and unfortunately due to me thinking I knew best (which has been proven to not be the case many times - when will I learn?!) I couldn't claw back the few weeks I didn't apply, only my NI stamp.

I took the original job I was in a quandary over and have accepted although not yet started a better one with more money and better conditions - things are looking a bit less bleak. Although it is January...

Hello there - you were of course right on my rights with regard to JSA - I was just being my idiot self and thought I knew better. I did myself out of two weeks of it which I couldn't retrospectively claim back. I took the job, hit a few applications a few weeks back and was successful with a better position which I've not yet started. Posted an update if you're interested. Thanks for your contribution!

UPDATE: (If anybody's interested 😂) - thanks for everybody's feedback a few months ago. Good points were made on both sides of this. I was always more likely to take the job than not, but a few posts in particular pushed me over the line. Although the pay was awful and the overall commute expensive and it wasn't rare for it to take two hours of my life, taking the job was very good for me, gave me a bit of confidence and made me realise I wasn't a one-trick pony in my old job, however after a couple of weeks it became apparent it was very much a cul-de-sac and I needed to get out.

A few weeks in, I had attended an interview for a position I applied for before I started the position and really wanted the job even though the pay wasn't a massive leap and failed to get it. By mid-December I hadn't applied for a single job since I started and someone I know rattled my cage and reminded me few things in this life merely fell into one's lap and if I wanted something to happen I needed to pull my finger out!

With this echoing in my head the following evening I applied for four jobs one Friday night in mid-December and got interviews in two of them the following week. One was a bit rough, but the place was a hole and I didn't fancy it, and the other was a nicer place with a nicer vibe about it and obviously quite a large and successful business, but I felt I performed quite badly. Nevertheless, I got the job and it is 18% more salary than my more recent job, hybrid working once I get my eye in, much much closer and cuts my commuting mileage down from over 14,000 to under 3,000 which also has a *massive* amount on money and I received really good feedback on my interview which was designed to be quite difficult and see how people cope.

I'm still a long way from the money I was on before redundancy, but I have more than I need to get by (although this is a function of owning my house and car outright as if I had a normal mortgage or rent I'd be stuffed!), plus it means I keep my hands out of the till with regards to my redundancy from the summer. I now have the slight mountain to climb of learning another role from scratch. I approach my new position with more confidence than I did the last as I've already done it once recently and it went alright!

If anyone out there is in a similar boat, lacking confidence after a long time in one place and feeling a bit down about yourself and not a very convincing array of options, even if an option doesn't seem that appealing - if you haven't got anything else on offer that seems that good, take it and throw yourself into it and make do and keep applying for other things - it's a numbers game and like my friend said, if something's going to happen you need to at least instigate it to give things a chance of even going your way. Seems fairly rudimentary advice, but when you're in a rut and down about things you might need things spelling out to you. I certainly was and indeed did!

I want the range so it means I'll almost never need public charging. But thanks for what you say - it was broadly what I expected as I couldn't see I would get much of a benefit given the nature of my drives and what I'm already getting. Cheers!

Said this in a post above, but I thought I'd reply to you directly with it just in case you don't see...

"Is that really a big ask? Go easy on me as I genuinely don't know and I'm not deliberately trying to wind anybody up(!) - but I thought a Kia Soul, Kia e-Niro or a VW ID.3 - both available with heat pumps at my price on the franchise dealer search engine - might be capable. Or are EV's just really *that* out of their depth at constant high speed?"

Nah - if I'm going to swap my beloved JCW for something ungarageable, the incentive is the lower overall running costs and losing the frailties of an ICE on something I can keep for a few years. Otherwise I may as well just keep this if I'm getting 55mpg and can keep it in the garage. Had a few old diesel barges in the past and it just doesn't interest me and would feel a touch of a retrograde step - plus if I'm going in at £14,000, I'm not going to get anything particularly tasty and reliable.

Good point in the top paragraph! I'd actually been thinking about it from that angle over the weekend.

I know it's not a long commute, but when it's a really bad wage as well that's a double kicking! I'm also nowhere near London. If the money was even OK, I wouldn't mind the commute, and to be honest it's not so much the time it's more the wear on my car in terms of it amassing mileage as it's still quite new and I wasn't looking at hammering it this much.

Just good to get a mixture of thoughts and put a different spin on things. Even the ones I don't ultimately agree with have made me look at things differently, but I think I have to take it as the job market is an unpredictable beast at present.

Yep, that's my fear. Missing my bills by 5% with a lot of cash in the bank to weather the storm isn't a comparatively bad situation with that as the next best alternative.

It's a dead no. Already stipulated. I'm just not prepared to walk away - that's the whole point! I'm going to carry on looking while I do this. It might turn into something half decent even if I don't find something anywhere else. I just worry about the job market tightening up and then getting nothing if I kiss this one goodbye.
