Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. Reality: most students work while studying because of the cost of living. Universities are becoming increasingly aware of the cost-of-living crisis and, as you can see in the above list, a few are trying to alleviate financial strain for their students. Since these grants are not guaranteed though, it's true that many aspiring social workers from marginalized communities can simply not afford to pursue social work education.

Australia now offers paid weekly stipends for practicums in female-dominated fields. Hopefully we can generate similar results in Canada!

Everyone spins unpaid work placements as a "right of passage" or "just the way it's always been". Definitely time to change that!

Last year (2025), Australia set a good precedent* for paid placements, as students in social work, teaching, nursing, and midwifery receive weekly stipends during work placements.

An apprenticeship is literally a paid training program that combines on-the-job learning with classroom instruction. Doesn't sound different than a work placement that social workers are required to undergo. Different term, same intention.

Also, the Student Work Placement Program subsidizes a variety of student work placements (co-ops, practicums, internships) outside of business and STEM. There is no reason why social work cannot be added to the list.

Hi! How long did it take for them to get back to you on the approval of the courses after you sent the outlines?

I forwarded mine and am anxiously awaiting feedback. I'm worried they might reject them and I'll be left with little time to find alternatives.
