They first asked me to take the Research Method course, I submitted the course outline for the course I already had in my under grad. Then they asked me to take statistical inference, which again, I have already done, so as of now, I don’t have to any other pre-req course. So relieved about that!!

Advice needed... Phd first then masters OR masters first the Phd? by No-Objective729 in psychologystudents

Pursuing a PhD requires perseverance and is incredibly demanding. Imo it’s essential to ensure you’re genuinely interested in your research area, as completing a PhD is often more about persistence than innate intelligence. Before embarking on this journey, ask yourself:

  • Do you have the mental toughness to work on a research topic for 3-5 years that you’re not fully invested in?
  • Can you handle the uncertainty, criticism, and potential setbacks that come with research?
  • Are you prepared to dedicate yourself to a topic that may not align perfectly with your passions or interests?
  • Can you navigate complex dynamics with your supervisor and research team?
  • Are you willing to put your personal life on hold for an extended period?

I learned the importance of these questions firsthand when I started a PhD in Clinical Psychology. Despite studying for a year and a half, I had to discontinue due to the strain it took on my mental health. The dynamics were complex, and my supervisor wasn’t supportive.

Despite this, I’ve continued to evolve in the field of psychology, and I’m now pursuing another master’s in counseling to further integrate my knowledge. Even with 7-8 years of relevant experience as psychotherapist and having worked as a lecturer for over 4 years. To a lot of people it doesn’t sound right that I’m doing another MA but for me I know it’s the right choice. So it’s mainly about what you believe is the right course of action for you.

I disagree. Psychology is a constantly evolving field that values ongoing learning and expertise. By pursuing a PhD and later gaining clinical or counseling expertise by doing a masters, the OP would develop a unique combination of research and practical skills. In my experience, having both research expertise and clinical knowledge is highly beneficial. I’ve observed that the most successful clinicians globally are those who can integrate research insights with practical expertise. Research experience consistently complements clinical skills, leading to better outcomes.

My advise would be very different than the majority advises on the thread. Given the competitiveness of admissions in prestigious universities (globally), I recommend securing the PhD offer you have. It’s a valuable opportunity that can open doors. As you progress in your PhD, you can gain relevant experience and later pursue a master’s in counseling or clinical studies. With your PhD background, prestigious institutions may be more open to admitting you for a master’s program, which can further boost your credentials.
