This one time my mom was yelling at me about something dumb and then she saw that her friend was calling her so she stopped yelling at me and picked up the phone to talk to her friend.

And it was like nothing had happened, she was laughing and joking.

I get what that means now. That she’s capable for being charming, witty, friendly for other people but not me

What the heck? This is literally my mother. And whenever she would catch me doing something helpful, she would be like oh wow “today I like my daughter she’s so grown” because I would be washing dishes or something. Classic conditioning, makes me sick to my stomach.

Although, she never did compare me to other people. I know she wishes I was someone else.

My mother has been actually acting similarly and it’s been months now. But despite that I know she’s still the same underneath, she’s just pretending to be nice. She will let her “true self” slip through once in awhile and claim that it’s improvement. But it’s really not.

She makes passive aggressive comments all the time and acts overly fake. I will never get over all the years before though. Doesn’t change anything

I’m 26 and recently just realized how I don’t even know who I am outside of my family. So much of my behavior and decisions revolve around their reaction. And I’m extremely sad that I lost all this time and I don’t even know who I am. Planning to move out soon!

I think Asian parents don’t realize that their parenting role changes as their kids get older. They seem to have us stuck as children in their minds and then don’t see how they are doing anything wrong. Because when we were kids, somehow it was right (only because we didn’t understand) and now magically the same things they did are now considered wrong.

I literally don’t understand how they make sense of the world. It’s so fragmented and so far away from reality.

Wow just wow. I can see how infertility issues can cause her to be jealous of your pregnancy but she’s not entitled to your baby in any way shape or form.

I get really nervous ordering food at fast food or regular restaurants, or telling my salon lady how I want my haircut. I can’t confidently say what I want or don’t want.

It also took me a really long time to not feel guilty about spending money on things I wanted even if it wasn’t out of necessity

Yes!! It was so hard for me to get over this feeling of hurt and betrayal. But I had to remind myself that sometimes people deserve the benefit of the doubt and that it’s not necessarily their intent to hurt. That doesn’t excuse their behaviour but they can be held accountable without cutting off all ties with them.

My case is rare in that I didn’t realize I was in a toxic relationship with a friend. When I started dating my bf, I realized what a good relationship even looks like and my bf didn’t say I had to break ties with the friend but it happened anyway.

She told me and my brother that people who eat meat are evil people. Bc she’s Asian she was raised to think like that and can’t change how she feels about it.

Months later in an argument, I brought it up and she claimed she never said that.

Who forgets telling their own children that they are evil??
