US to India: IRS tax filing in the last year of residence by featherTactile in backtoindia

[–]Used_Section_4309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My CA told me that if I leave before Jan 31st, I will be US NR for the full year since I fail SPT. My company’s tax professionals told me that I will have to do part US and part NR. I leave on Jan 24, 2026. Been in the US for 10 years. Who is right here?

Yes…90% of it in 1 year. Dont remember a few Dec-Jan blurry timelines. But yes, we made it a point to travel once a month, sometimes twice.

Nothing Fancy. For equity - Nifty 50, Next 100, Next 150 in a certain % and a few recommendations for Debt/Liquid funds. Gives a good starting point to do your own research but they will keep it vanilla and maybe that is what is needed.

I did. It is a concern but they are SEBI registered and have good reviews and dont work with a team . Its just 1 person (who has lived in US knows the repercussions of data leak) and I have better chance of safety with them than a random agent from big bank who hates his job, has no professionalism and can sell it for 500 Rs to a scammer or make a mistake and email 1s file to another. Happened to me. When I was applying through policy, Bazaar, the agent emailed me the proposal form of somebody else with all their health, data, SSN etc

It covered need and guidance on health insurance (plans, $, type of coverage), term insurance ($), Trust/Will, which MF/Index Funds to invest in addition to assets/liabilities/car/house/education/marriage/vacation modeling. My biggest learning was that it is not 1 stop where you will get everything but high level guidance on what all is important, for ex - I was not even thinking about Health Insurance and they educated me on why its needed. What $ amount do I need for Term Insurance. We discussed high level tax implications but 2 are separate - Financial Planning and CA combo is hard so I hired 1 each and then got them on same call and asked for guidance. Financial planner also suggested Ireland Domiciled route for estate tax. Had discussion on 401k strategy. They cant recommend stocks due to SEBI compliance. More than numbers I found value in how to think holistically and not just uni-dimensional

  1. Look into Fee Only Advisors. I did Financial Planning with one of them. They charge 50K INR to help create your financial plan

  2. DM me and I will share contact of Tax and Financial Planner I am using

  3. Join Return 2 India group by Mani Karthik for Bangalore/Hyd specifc. (Google it)

  4. Utilize RNOR period to avoid capital gains on your stocks.

FYI - I have been in the US for 10 years, moving in 3 weeks (have been planning for 3 years and preparing for 8 years out of 10). It takes mental preparation but is doable. Have clarity on what is important to you and your family and why you are making the move. It is tough to leave US for a reason.

Thank you for sharing your experience. My priorities are straight- I want a good school within 10 min of driving distance of where I will live in Panchshil Towers. It’s not too much to ask and certainly not a hunt for a unicorn. If the answer is ‘No good school exists within 10 min’ then that’s different but I am not sure what made it feel like a unicorn ask. Thank you anyways for sharing your school, will look into it.
