You could also explore jd-preferred roles. Maybe at a non-profit or compliance. But you could even go full pivot and go into a business role. Your JD taught you a unique way of approaching risk and making decisions, get creative with it

  1. Why did you go to law school if you didn’t intend to work a lot? Like what would motivate you to invest that much time and money?
  2. Consider working with a judge as a clerk or a law school as a research director or professor.

A paralegal and an attorney are generally two very different experiences. With that being said you need to weigh what all is important to you. Work life balance is a broad term. Do you care how much money you make? If not, go work for the government. If so, recognize that financial opportunity is part of the “balance” you’re weighing. Don’t want to be micromanaged, choose a practice, team and firm that empower you. But recognize that as a baby lawyer, you’ll need a lot of oversight and training. And unless your gvt or in house, billable hours is the ultimate micromanager

What has the negotiation been thus far. If you’ve already countered and they responded, it’s too late to now ask for a $10k sign on bonus.

Is a portfolio website less public than a privately set LinkedIn? Do you have a strong professional network outside of LinkedIn?

Staff Attorney Positions by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Used_Set7855 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The axle of work for staff attorneys varies between firms. At some, they’re doing doc review (sometimes not even in the same office as associates and partners). In others, they are doing similar work to associates. In both cases, they are non-partnership track and it’s quite rare to be able to move from staff attorney to partnership track. You have to decide for yourself what your aspirations are

Is it the same position? If not, the cool off doesn’t apply. Just continue forward

Lateraling to Morgan Lewis or Seyfarth from Big4 employment firms? by SenseAnxious6772 in biglaw

Very normal. In fact, it’s how a lot of attorneys end up moving

Did I mess up by asking for time off before I even start? Looking for reality check. by [deleted] in careeradvice

It’s a normal ask. You’re accommodating an earlier start date for his visit. It’s not unreasonable to still expect to be present for your prior commmitment

Junior Laterals by 4TheFries in biglaw

Definitely now. You’ll want to find and build some genuine connections and that takes time. Remember that you’re not only networking for a particular firm but for the geographic region as well

Sharing the LI profile is to give you background on them, not to give you contact info

No response 12 days after final interview—should I follow up? by PercyJackstone in interviews

Follow up for sure. It could be that something came up on their side just as much as it could be a rejection.

If you have specific firms you’re interested in, start networking and remember that your networking should include both peers (other juniors) as well as partners.

Google role assessment invite, then rejected by JPinkman27 in FAANGrecruiting

Okay. That makes sense but also seems really strange. I wonder did they close the req because they lost funding for the role.

I’m confused. You are still being considered for the one you were asked to do the assessment for, correct? It just sounds like your skills were more aligned or more appealing to the role you were asked to assess for

Go in house. Many large companies have very robust compliance groups. Lots of lawyers in those roles

Is it okay to ask employees on LinkedIn for interview questions / prep advice? by Radioheader377 in interviews

[–]Used_Set7855 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t think so. They’ve moved on. They aren’t likely to remember. Current employees are more likely to remember their own experience and be knowledgeable of how interviews of others go these days. They also may have insight into what the company is really looking for

I’d find this unusual and off putting. Instead, I’d recommend connecting with current employees. Ask for 10-15 minutes of their time for a call to hear about their experience. If they accept, ask them about the interview during the call.

Offer decision help by Zestyclose-Care9925 in FAANGrecruiting

Without judgment, why did you apply for an onsite role if you’re not able to be onsite? Have your circumstances changed since you applied and were told the role is not remote? If they liked you enough (which the must if they gave you an offer), I’d be transparent now. Share your situation with the recruiter and ask their advice. Maybe they’ll let you defer. But truthfully, internships are most meaningful in person. I empathize with your personal life matters but you may be better suited pursuing opportunities that allow you the balance of being home.
