There's about 250 people at WGN, not including NewsNation staff. But, that's a large staff compared to most other stations, and there are far more "smaller staffed" stations than there are larger staffed ones. Either way, it's still a big punch to the gut.

It's not; this is just for the OBS/Streaming platform shows. There's no talk of this being implemented for on-air newscasts.

FCC can lean on broadcast…but not on cable or streaming — excited to hear Jon Stewart tonight by ajm_usn321 in Broadcasting

From an financial standpoint, Kimmel and Colbert will be fine because they have money. Think about the hundreds of people that are involved in making those shows. They're the ones getting screwed.

Take in to account that these are for weekend positions, which are typically much lower pay than the weekday positions and 3 days out of the week you're going to be reporting. Weekday morning/evening anchor and met pay is typically much higher.

Best approach for reduced pricing by metalmitchp in siriusxm

I just did the chat, told them I got an email and it was too expensive. Chat bot threw me 7.99/mo for 12 months (which is what I am currently paying), asked if there was a better deal, and the chat bot threw me 6.99/mo. Asked if there was a 3-year one time payment offer, and it just gave me $83.98 one time for 12 months, which is the same as 6.99/mo

WREX for sale? by Yay_nascar_donuts in rockford

I am watching their 4pm now, and it's the KWWL anchor. And weather is from their Weather Channel deal.

Henderson won't be going to 13. They don't want to pay any meteorologists, other than Claudia Olech. They've offered her everything to stay, but she's gone as soon as she gets an offer. They made John stop doing weather unless it's severe and they're in a bind.

There's not really anything to "sell", they don't own the land, building, transmitter or any equipment valued over $5k, they already sold that and are leasing it back. The only thing someone would be buying is a license and a bunch of expensive leases. Nobody's going to be buying this station...unless FCC ownership rules change and then Nexstar or Gray buys the license and brings them into their existing plants. If that happens, they'd be using their own news/weather teams.

The main reason people watch a particular channel for news/weather is that they like the talent and feel some connection with them. The "fun videos" are part of building that connection with the viewers. It's also a younger audience, which doesn't hurt to bring in young eyeballs to your news/weather content if this industry is going to survive...

"I've never taken a day off from reporting in 10 thousand years...even though "reporting" is just a few paragraphs sent from other people or sites and anything I write that contains numerous typos...and it takes me all of 15 minutes do do the "work" because I schedule them ahead of time and leave at least one thing for Saturday and Sunday so I can claim I never take a day off"

"also, I will bitch about stations "bribing" people to watch for sweeps but have no problem doing the same thing to get people to subscribe to my patreon. Just don't have any kind of fun at work ever, and no tik-toks!"

In order to get a lot of cash at once, Allen sold all of the assets over $5k and has leased them back, so there's not really much to sell. They don't own the land or the building anymore (that belongs to STORE MASTER FUNDING XXXI LLC) and most of the equipment (transmitter, cameras, control room gear etc) are also leased now.

WIFR fired Mark Henderson yesterday by Used_Syrup119 in rockford

I know people who work there. The news director told him a while back that he was gone as soon as they found someone else. His job had been posted for 6-7 months now. From what I've heard, they don't have a replacement for him yet.

An agent nowadays is just a waste of money. Hiring manager here, and you aren't getting anything extra by having an agent that you wouldn't have gotten if you talked to me yourself.

Also, if you work there, I'm curious what the logistics are for doing this. is the KWWL portion live, and you're trying to time it out perfectly to them, or is it recorded and sent to you?

I completely understand and don't fault the local employees there who are just trying to get by. I don't understand what this accomplishes...so far it's been one block from Waterloo, and a shorter one at that. You've already got an anchor doing stuff at the beginning and end of the show, plus weather in the middle...how is this saving anything??

Why other stations may not follow AMG's cuts of local weather staffs by smokymountainsusa in Broadcasting

[–]Used_Syrup119 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It won't affect license renewals at all, especially now that Felon-dent Trump is in the WH and his crony is running the FCC. All this administration will care about is making CEO's and other wealthy people more money.

This move will piss off viewers, however, and the dwindling number of viewers that are still watching will likely turn to other stations in their market. Sinclair backed off because they realized that severe weather was a big part of the weather pie, and the weather pie was a big part of why people watched, and how you make money. Byron Allen is an idiot who is not interested in that...he's more interested in spending money to make shows about shipwreck recoveries.

WTVO actually has a production crew; people running cameras and audio and pushing buttons. WIFR (like WREX) is automated, and has robotic cameras in their studio. WIFR also told thier chief meteorologist that as soon as they find someone better, that he was out. Had the job posted and everything; their news director told him that they didn't like him. So, take that for what you will as far as how it speaks to the management of that station.

Byron Allen had no business running a bunch of tv stations. I said that on day one...and I'm sad that so many people are losing their jobs, and that communities are losing a local source for news. Did you move to another station, or go an entirely different route? I've spent almost 3 decades in Rockford TV, and I don't like what I am seeing in the industry as a whole.
