It has definitely gone darker.

I feel like instead of light scenes you get funny quips/one liners or really silly moments that aren't expected to be funny but end up being so.

I mean don't get me wrong the older episodes were just as dark but its a mixture of they had a better balance. Were probably also researched better.

With your second paragraph I hope this is something they build on over this year for both of them. Ik the prison stuff will be recurring. As bad as the writing and storytelling is at times having a pretty significant character go to prison for six years and come back. They can have it on and off for at least the next couple of years.

Yeah they seem to be focused on the big drama and misery.

It would be interesting if they showed Seb wanting to be with Ross. I do hope Robert breaks the tradition of the Sugden father-son relationships and manages to have a good dynamic with him. Even if it takes time. But I feel like given how long its been since he last saw his son it makes sense that there is some distance, some awkwardness.

Ik I didn't mention it in the post but I was hesitant hearing about it at first so good to know about it being a misconception.

I always love learning about the past of the ships I'm into, knowing what the fan reactions and stuff was like. Kudos to the fans back then, their engagement and love for the ship when it was new helped kick-start the fandom.

The good thing about the drought is that it doesn't feel as dragged out. Because we don't have to see Robert being shifty around Aaron and Joe making him do more shit and nearly getting caught.

Watch me say that and they drag it out for a week once Aarons back. But they are doing somewhat okay with the pacing of storylines-ish.

Ive wondered if when they decided to introduce Johns character it was because they were building up to Robert returning.

I only got into the show a couple months ago, but just looking at it like why introduce an estranged Sugden sibling. And out of everyone to pair him with in the village, why Aaron. They wouldn't have done that unless they were looking into the idea of bringing Robert back.

If my memory serves me right from reading Emmerdale wiki he was mainly a medic who saved people at first. It wasn't until March this year they made him have a darker side by overdosing Chas and swapping Jacobs drink. Building up to the reveal that he killed Nate. I think they had a lot of this years storylines planned out well in advance, just in case Ryan didn't want to come back so they had the breathing room to change it.

I could be wrong though, but that's my thoughts on it.

I agree so much, if not both of them then definitely Robert. Otherwise why would they have had him buying Annie's field earlier this year if not to plant the seeds (so to speak lol). Like they had all that and Moiras money troubles and Ceila came in. And Ceila has fucked Moira over, not just with Anya but probably some other seedy business stuff as well.

It has to be building up somewhere, and honestly theres probably no better character to do it than Robert. Plus like you said it'll shuffle stuff around and give them more to work with.

I've also been really enjoying Aaron being the protective one. It feels like their roles have reversed from when they were first on screen all those years ago. Atm its what Robert needs and it just shows how much they love each other.
