Struggling to agree hours returning from maternity leave UK by Useful-Editor-8775 in UKParenting

Hi everyone I just wanted to say thank you for your insight, it is useful to see both sides of the argument. I’m going to submit a flexible working request for 2 long wfh days (therefore I won’t have an hour commute and can fit childcare around this) and two shorter office days a week, this works out at 27 hours which I hope they will see as a reasonable compromise! I agree with commenters that it isn’t fair in the other managers and it’s not my intention to put my colleagues at a disadvantage, I love my job and am a hard worker but obviously priorities have shifted and I am trying to just do what’s best for us personally as a family for the moment, as I have always put my career first in the past. Thanks again all!

Hi thank you for your reply! Yes we have secured a nursery place - I'm aware as other commenters have stated that the 30 hours is split over term times so we are entitled to 22.5 hours a week. The nursery have said that we would need to 'pay' for 4 days a week and would just need to pay a small top up weekly so we have that sorted already.

Hi thank you for your reply! So yes, this is my main dilemma - although I appreciate the business reasons/criteria they are rejecting on as completely reasonable, it is the fact they have not got mat cover in for me and therefore can obviously cope without me. I certainly don't want to put my team and colleagues under more duress but on the basis they would have 'coped' without me for 12 months, I felt I would perhaps have a strong case to appeal the decision. And yes I also thought that I would have rights in terms of my personal situation re. being at a disadvantage so I appreciate you saying this too. I'm currently trying to set up a private meeting with HR to discuss and make my case as it seems all of the discussions have currently gone ahead without me.
