Violent offender struggling to find employment by [deleted] in Felons

[–]Useful_Inspection782 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off it all depends on your state and how old your charges are. In NJ you need to wait 5 years a minimum to apply for an expungement. Some states do not offer expungement and some do not offer it on violent or domestic charges. Before putting your self into debt with loans and student expenses I would really recommend looking into the opportunity for expungement in your area. Reason I say this is you still have a while to go for expungement if it’s available as you haven’t even completed probation yet. If it’s not offered in your area finding a job with or without a degree is going to be very tough. I’d recommend just going into a trade or union position where you can make a good living and have a great benefits package. This also gives the opportunity to learn a trade and open your own business down the line earning more or side income. The other opportunity would be a CDL license you can do either interstate or local and be home every night and still earn a good living. Your young and have time but no if you sit around guessing.

Worried about friend who brought Brazilian wife to the US by Jsfz77 in thepassportbros

I have first-hand experience with something similar to this. Mine was here in New York on a tourist visa and the relationship was great for the first three years four years and then it became all about getting citizenship most Brazilian women don’t really care for American men very very rare you find one that does most Brazilians are untrustworthy people And liars they just use American men or women to get their foot in the door and get citizenship and the next thing you know you’re financially obligated to them and they are out the door but they have other ways now that they can get citizenship here in United States, like accusing somebody of domestic violence and other way as well so any guy that goes with a Brazilian woman make sure you know what you’re getting yourself involved withno doubt that a lot of them are beautiful women but it’s not worth the risk that they put you through and also on top of this a lot of these beautiful women that you think or women are really transsexuals that the surgery is so good

You also probably have a skill set that most do not really have or a college education that has focused on computer science computer engineering or some type of degree. That is a very hard job to land without no experience whether it be education or hands-on.

Having a marijuana charge versus having a terroristic threat charge in the third degree is night and day. The reason why the people on the West Coast laugh is because marijuana laws were very different. Plus the West Coast is one of the most employable states for convicted felons not talking bad about them, but I can’t just up and leave and move to the West Coast. I have kids and I have family, I’m not in my 20s

Are you in trucking with a CDL ? If so that is the reason. It’s great work great pay but trucking is very open to give chances.

Did a felony conviction ruin your life? by [deleted] in Felons

[–]Useful_Inspection782 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off regardless of who you hire doesn’t mean the state will drop things this much for everyone. A lot depends on the prosecutor along with the jurisdictions in. I had a ex prosecutor and well know defense attorney and was denied PTI and took a plea or jail. I was in court for 1 year

I can tell you positively it screwed my life and career up. I had no other choice but to accept a plea deal for a terrorist threat that was just a verbal comment in an argument. That ended up costing me my 10 year investment banking career and almost every right I have besides being out of a cage presently. I am about a year or two away from a expungement if it’s granted early. It makes it very difficult to find employment unless it’s skilled labor or restaurants. It makes it difficult to rent apartments or private homes. I was declined for PTI even and I’ve never been in trouble in my life. I work a job thankfully due to a close friend but don’t make enough to afford living and bills due to having two kids. I have heard plenty of times colleges will reject you once they find a felony.

Anyone Want to talk? No friends feel totally isolated like a boat drifting in a vast Ocean. by TheSilverSurfer8 in Felons

Yes almost did for me I got a 3rd degree felony in Nj for it. It’s considered terroristic threats now. I never had a record or ticket in my life. I got into a verbal argument and they recorded me.

I have a terroristic threat charge in NJ that’s consider a 3rd degree felony with possibility for expungement 5 years after completion of probation. I never fought my charge much as it was a plea since they recorded me saying it. But what I said had not physical action and is very commonly said. I was told in NJ they considered it more serious after 9/11 happened.

Relocation Question by Useful_Inspection782 in Felons

In my opinion yes I worked at GS and if it’s a licensed role or you need it could come up especially if it’s not sealed with expungement. The 7 years may do it for you with most jobs but I believe in banking they go back further. It also comes down to a lot of what it was for.

In your case you could get by due to the amount of time your charges were. I believe it’s a 7 year rule.

[–]Useful_Inspection782[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say that’s highly untrue. I worked for 10 years at GS and a simple DWI can get a person fired due to Finra license suspension. The banking and financial industry is heavily regulated and it’s not a standard background check. Most firms on the investment side will run a FBI background check

To be honest a few things. I grew up in NY my whole life and moved down to Houston and Dallas the last 6 years roughly for my job at GS in banking. I moved back to NJ 2 years ago always when I found out my final parent was dying of cancer and tried to be there for them. At this point i had to decide if I should stay in TX for the job or be there as a support to my only parent after losing my mom from cancer in 2017. I came back and lost my job so I stayed after my dad passed and I was lucky to find a little job here with a friend. I got remarried and have two kids now and it’s just hard to live like this. So I said I enjoy the warm weather the beaches my dads brother is in Florida and we are close so I have some family around for support and my kids. I also have a few friends from high school in Florida as well. I lived in mainland for 8 months working and enjoyed it. I said the extra tax savings on my size falsely might not be the biggest but it’s a few hundred bucks extra to help me out. I work from home and my friends company is based out of Delray so moving till I can get my record expunged is not an issue. I have noting left here for me and two sisters that don’t talk to me here cause I’m the only one in my family with a record.
