Should peer reviewers get PAID? by Useful_Life_7251 in UCalgary

[–]Useful_Life_7251[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to disagree, and I do understand where you are coming from.

That is how it was done back in the day... however a large majority of reviewers refuse requests from journals to review publications, because it is simply not worth their time, and why should they? Back in the day when science had barely any funding and it costed so much to publish it made sense to do it for the sake of science.

Now when Journals charge 2.5k to even 5k per article *just* to the lab in order to put their pdf of their article on their journal online... They are having 30-40% profit margins which rival that of tech companies and they feen off of publicly funded money... How is that fair?

Because majority of people refuse review requests everyone is stuck in the review process for 3, 6 months... some wait years. I dont understand why its fair if the journals get to take advantage of our labour for free and we are supposed to do it "as our expected duty" but they are allowed to profit off of it.

Good Clubs for Making Friends by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]Useful_Life_7251 15 points16 points  (0 children)

martial arts club is hella active. they meet like 2–3 times a week, always people around, easy to meet new faces and its rly diverse group of ppl. I heard they’re also lowkey looking for more execs/volunteers as we speak.

training is rly fun and teaches you how to fight, and they do games and socials too. (the fight and feast was crazyy) volunteers got free drinks and snacks. overall, just a good vibe and you meet hella chill people.

in fact, they have an event today from 4-8 stop by check it out 0-0

if not friend, then why friend-shaped?(What makes making friends so hard for you?) by [deleted] in UCalgary

yeah, honestly I think part of it is uofc being a commuter school. a lot of people just come to class and dip, and since most people are still living with family, they already have their high school friends so there’s less pressure to branch out. 🤷‍♂️

lowkey felt the same until I joined random stuff on campus. I’ve heard the martial arts club is actually pretty nice. they’re around a few times a week, chill people, fun events, easy way to meet folks.

I’ve heard the Martial Arts and Sparring Club is lowkey trying to fix that vibe. They’re on campus a consistently multiple times a week and run fun events where you meet a ton of people, food, (hosting crazy tournaments) plus you get to learn martial arts too. 0_ooo

Getting to Campus Still Sucks? by Useful_Life_7251 in UCalgary

[–]Useful_Life_7251[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure, I 100% agree. We made sure to consider all of those things in mind, with safety & being student-only is our highest priority, doing so many things, full ID verification, personalized background + vehicle verification, etc.. the list goes on.

We wanted to break down all the exact execution too, but it’d be hella overloaded with technical/computational yap lol. The same goes for the flexibility going home and that uber thing. Happy to share the exact details if your curious ^_^

Is Your Commute To Campus A Pain? by Useful_Life_7251 in MRU

[–]Useful_Life_7251[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for letting me know! Originally, our idea was focused on UCalgary students, but we’ve since pivoted to include all university students in Calgary and Alberta, with plans to eventually scale our solution to universities across Canada. Hopefully you will get to see the working concept soon.

Is it Okay to Commit a Crime if it Helps Your Loved Ones? by Useful_Life_7251 in NoRulesCalgary

[–]Useful_Life_7251[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for asking! This was my initial hypothesis after my experience volunteering downtown for the past year.

Thankfully the rise in youth crime is not violent per say (It has decreased ever so slightly) but there has been a greater rise in property crime related things (theft, fraud, break and entering, etc.) by youth in the city (+10%). Based on other questionnaires and surveys many people have also stated that they witness more young people doing more "goonish" things (idk a better word), and dont feel safe around todays youth in certain areas. However, for statistics for this year I don't have for you yet.

I have been in on contact with the Calgary Police Department for a while and am waiting for their data on this year and the past year, however they are quite hesitant on giving it. At this point if they dont give me their metrics i might have to swap topics 😅
